CHAPTER 1-
It all started a year ago when my family had just been informed of my dear grandmothers death. She had been living in the soapy-smelling, old persons home a few blocks away, for a many few years now and, although very unfortunate, it came as no surprise at all that she had passed away. In the days after her timely death we were called up to kindly come in and retrieve all of her personal belongings immediately, otherwise they would have to be destroyed.
Arriving in the mid-afternoon to the home, my mother, my father, my older brother and I climb out of our colbat blue people-mover in a depressing motion, for seeing the home reminds us of Grandma and brought back many joyous memories. A older woman with a tight jaw and slight wrinkled skin ushers us in and leads us toward Grandma's well-known room in the back of the warmly home. An aged burgundy suitcase sits resting against the dull floral patterned duvet on the bed, along with an assortment of boxes and crates filled with her personal items and valuables. Mum instructs us to each take something containing items and advises us to sift mindfully through and only take things that were worth keeping.
I have been assigned to a worn-out box in the far corner, and I start to probe around inside searching for valuables. As I am sifting, my hands brush over what seems a leather bound book. Cautiously, taking into consideration that it had, had better times I grasp its withered spine and pull it out to take a better look in the stream of sunlight flooding in through the spotless window. Opening the front cover with extreme caution, I find the name 'Elizabeth Marigold-Lawson', the name seems almost too familar until it finally clicks in the muddled brain of mine. In my pale, sweaty hands I am holding the diary of my great-great grandmother...!
