I knew Jack DiCote was on the wrong side of the law. I knew he was involved with several bootleggers, and was, quite frankly, a bit of a spiv. He never exactly told me, but it wasn't really a secret. Those expensive little (or sometimes larger) gifts he gave me, that he wouldn't ordinarily be able to afford said it for him.
I loved Jack more than anything else in the world, and I think he felt the same way about me. Before I knew him I was nothing. Nothing.
I was so happy. I was young, good-looking and blonde. What's more, I had a man.
But then it happened. That fateful night in spring 1932.
