It was time to admit defeat. You knew it, Joe knew it, but he was to stubborn to agree.
"Joe we have been walking for hours... Face it babe, were lost. I can try the radio phone and maybe a ranger can come help us." You begged. After a entire day of hiking in the forest and taking pictures of all the wildlife, your feet were aching and the water bottles you packed were nearly gone.
"We are not lost Y/N come on I know where we are." Joe encouraged and stepped deeper into the unknown greenery, crunching on leaves and branches in his path. You sighed unenthusiastically, crossed your arms and followed behind him.
"Don't you trust me?" Joe asked half jokingly, taking your hand to keep you from tripping on any uprooted trees.
"Of course I just don't like the idea of starving to death out here." You said while rolling you're eyes. He stuck his tongue out at you and traveled along. Every tree looked the same and you could have sworn you were the only two people left in the entire nature park. Plus because of your adventurous boyfriend, you both had traveled farther from the path than expected.
After another half hour of his constant direction change and your yammering, he gave up and asked you to call a ranger. You happily obeyed and the call only lasted a few minutes, while the rangers trip out here would be about an hour. He demanded that you both were to stay where you were and he would come find you.
You slumped onto a tree stump and put your head in between you knees. You were exhausted and Joe was somehow still full of energy. Staring at your shoes and the twigs and ants surrounding them.
"Hey I'm going to go and see if I can find anything to eat." Joe called and headed into the brush where you couldn't see him.
"Wait Joe the ranger said to stay put!" You shouted after him but he was already gone. Find food? He couldn't tell the difference between a leaf and a bug and you couldn't help but laugh at the thought.
After a few minutes though you started to get worried. You could no longer hear him rustling around and it was unsettling, you called out to him but their was no answer. You heart sped up with each step you took away from the area you were supposed to wait.
"Joe! Come on this isn't funny! Where are you!" You yelled and cupped you hands together for a louder sound. The sun was beginning to set and you couldn't shake the feeling of your stomach doing somersaults. Looking around for any sign of your boyfriend you heard the crunch of a twig in the eerie twilight. Your heartbeat sped increased belligerently and you felt goose bumps crawl up your arms.
"Joe! Joseph! God dammit!" The panic in your voice was obvious and made the words tremble out of your mouth.
Without seeing any of it coming you whipped back screaming as something crashed next to you, so close it could have crushed you. It was Joe who then sprang up, throwing his hands in the air shouting. His eyes were wide and full of terror as he searched himself for any injuries then took a look at his surrounding. He saw you and immediately embraced you in a crushing hug.
"Oh my god I'm so glad I found you, we have to get out of here I don't know what the hell is going on but I- I uh we have to leave! I think I saw something!" He was rambling and continuously checking behind him, as if he were waiting for something to grab him. His hair stuck out in odd directions and had mud and twigs stuck in it, his cloths were stained with mud and slightly ripped.
"Hey hey it's going to be okay we are fine, we are going to be fine we just have to get back to that stump I was sitting on, the ranger is coming." You reassured and took his face in your hands, staring into his eyes and making sure he saw how calm you were. He took a few deep breaths and nodded, trembling but wrapping an arm around you, pulling you close protectively and together you tried finding the spot you were at before.
You could have sworn that the tree stump had been just around the corner of a couple bushes but everything looked the same and blended even more with the darkness surrounding you. You both had flashlights in your backpacks and shone them around trees and branches, searching for something that looked recognizable. Splitting up was no longer an option for either of you but you both did cover more ground being a close distance away. Joe searched the areas to the left while you stayed on the right, shining and flashlight with one hand and trying the radio phone again with the other.
"Hey Y/N..." Joes voice was low yet full of distress. "Is thi- is this the phone they usually use." He asked and held up a broken, battered radio phone. You stood frozen and let the fear shiver up your spine. Joes eyes were wild and haunted and you couldn't help but notice the fact that his whole body was shaking.
You took a deep breath and pushed all the disastrous thoughts out of your head. "We are going to be okay, I'm sure of it. There's nothing out here anyway." You gave him a small smile and he nodded stiffly in response. Together you sat in a small patch of grass and leaves, leaning against one another with your hands entwined. Joe had calmed down some and was talking and chuckling every now and then. The night wasn't so bad after a while, even with the weight of panic pressing down on your shoulders.
Sometime in the night you both fell asleep on each other, neither of you remember which one was supposed to be look out at that time but I guess in the end, it's didn't really matter, your fate was set the moment you walked into those woods. Not even the next morning, when a few park rangers heard a horrifying scream pierce through the silent night and decided to wait till sunrise to investigate, they found the bloody cloths and patches of hair attached to bits of scalp. Bodies themselves were never found, only backpack contents and a ranger badge covered in sticky scarlet stains scattered around the area, not very far though no, you never got very far. It all happened so suddenly you didn't even get to hear yourself scream for help before a flash of baby blue and then nothing but red.
The Rangers deemed it an accident, one they would never tell the police, or anyone really. They couldn't have the park being shut down after this being the fourth disappearance in under a month. They only cleaned up the evidence of any tragic crime and walked back to their posts. Not bothering to follow the light blood trail leading to a tree, where a boy with blue eyes and tangled hair sat in tears, staring at his hands with remnants of flesh under his finger nails.
Hating himself for what he had done to an innocent girl who loved him.
Also for knowing he would soon do it again.Thank you for reading! Don't forget to vote! Thnks fr th vts
