The Grey Order was founded by a fallen angel, who kept his identity a secret even from those he trained and guided through the Grey. Like Erika, Lucifer, The Grey was once one of God's angels of light and good in the world. He existed in the Grey before Lucifer was created, some say he felt the imbalance in the world and knew Lucifer had more dark than light in her body. Some say he worked from outside to let her develop aside from God's watchful eye.
The Grey watched Lucifer become cast down to hell where she became satanic, some say he was joyed because the light became darker and balance was once again restored. However, Satan made deals with Demons and brought in more darkness to the world. The Demonic kings were formed and entered the world, bringing pain, misery, rage and death in her wake. God obviously didn't like that but he was too nice to do much to stop the pair from killing mankind. The Grey made his appearance then, from the Grey against God's command. He went down into the dark and shone a light, killing hordes of demonic figures, restoring the balance to the world once again. Angry God ripped away The Grey's wings, and hurtled him away from his plane of existence. The Grey simply walked the Grey Road, guiding souls who fell into pits of darkness, bring light to their lives and seeing them happy. He took the form of a friends, a lover, and a whisper, anything he needed to be to restore balance to individual people's lives.
When the light got too strong, when angels tried to raid hell and bring about the end of darkness, The Grey came, he stood shoulder to shoulder with demons and slaughtered the angels and their brilliant white swords. He enveloped himself in darkness and charged them, tainting and destroying the wings of any that tried to tip the balance.
After this war, the demons began to build arrogance, they were winning and darkness could enter heaven above. With Satan, The Demonking and many other demonic lords, they could usurp the God above. The Grey did not let that stand either. He looked God in the eye and told him to lend power to The Grey. God did so and The Grey banished all the demons back into hell, and while he did this The Grey also banished God to the realm above. Satisfied that balance was restored The Grey settled on Earth, continuing to save people throughout time.
Unfortunately humans aren't balanced creatures, kingdoms arose and dominated others, and people were slaughtered for religion or beliefs. This was unbalanced. The Grey being a master of manipulation, honesty and deceit took on more human forms, and guided people along the path of balance. Helping and hurting those he touched, but ultimately making the world stronger.
He met many people that viewed the world in either black or white. He had seen people with dark, dark lives do very good deeds, and people with light lives do very dark deeds. These people he balanced through pain or joy. He met very few who viewed the world as he did, these people he watched, and these people he helped. They, through their own actions balanced those around them, caring more about the long rather than the short term benefits of balance.
Eventually he met a young woman, whom he feel in love with. Unfortunately this love made The Grey feel more light in the world, and through him she bore him a son, through his power she betrayed him for darkness. Balancing his world as it should be. Distraught and disgusted with himself The Grey left the world behind him, watching people walk their paths, he made a deal with Death himself and Life herself in exchange for constant agony he was able to stand between the doors of Life and Death, leading people away from one and into another, depending on the balance they brought to the world.
His son was born in stark contrast to his father. Where his father was grey entirely, this man controlled Light and Darkness due to the deal offered by Life and Death. With warring feelings constantly in his heart he sought balance, he sought his father, but it was never there for him. He secluded himself from the world for many years, teaching himself balance, and trying to control the powers he had. Eventually he mastered it and he put all his energy into two short swords. The Swords of Night and Day were formed. After this was completed, he achieved balance, all colour in the world vanished and he opened his eyes to see only grey. His two swords looked identical without their respective glows and before his eyes they merged into one, a long pure grey katana. As he gripped the katana in his hands colour flooded back into the world, except to the room he was standing in, Monochrome emerged. This room would become the Room of Balance in many years following.
His thoughts were no longer constantly warring, he had achieved balance, yet he knew he could enter one side or the other if he needed to. He could become an angel of god, or a demon from hell. He controlled balance and Life and Death together worked through him, he could manipulate anything he wanted, as long as the sword was with him. He used his soul as a scabbard and sheathed it within him as he ventured into the world.
Moving through the world as a shadow he could move instantly anywhere, and he drew on the knowledge of people around him to see how much time had passed. It was 1300AD.
Over the next 700 years he spent time balancing the world under the directions of Life and Death themselves. Life paid him with joy in his life, friends, and lovers and repaired his broken heart when they aged or moved away from him. Death paid him in power, knowledge and deception. He saved people holding Life's hands, and killed with Death's scythe.
He met fallen angels and banished demons. Some were threats to the world and some needed help. Those he dealt with. He met a few however that were balanced enough that they didn't fit where they originally came from. These he taught pure balance, magic and the arts of manipulation and deception. From these the Order of Grey was formed, each being a bringer of balance, a Grey One, named after his father and his birthright. Life and Death were both equally pleased and angered. Each were given immortality from Life and exemption from Death. One proved themselves worthy of becoming a Grey One roughly every 100 years. Being brought to the Grey Temple, located hidden away in Indonesia, along the middle of Earth's line, those that wanted to become Grey Ones had to subdue the lightness and darkness inside them, while covered in the Greyness in The Room of Balance. Once they emerged, they saw the world in only grey when they tapped into the power given to them by Life and Death.
A characteristic seen on Grey Ones is the greyness to their eye when they use their power, or the tattoos of magic runes embedded into their skin by a grey mist.
Monochrome became one with Life and Death, on a quest to find his father. Some say he stands between the doors as his father does, others say they are battling for both life and death of the world. Some say they control God and Satan. Others believe they have been adopted by Life and Death. Monochrome left the Order under the care of his first disciple, whom he appointed Speaker. The other five members, Silencers, are those that bring back balance to the world. Through the years the Speaker had taught more Listeners the way of the Grey, but anymore Silencers would cause unbalance to the world.
All the current Speaker knows is that he carries Monochrome's sword and it pulses with its previous owners life and death in harmony.
Each Grey One is a master of combat, magic, subterfuge, manipulation, deceit and coercion. Trained by the son, Life and Death themselves. Thus the order stood at seven strong when 2016 came about, when hells gates opened one of the Silencers faced the demon horde, but she was betrayed by the angels sent with her and killed. Now the Order of Grey is unbalanced. The Speaker searches for a new Listener to become a new Silencer, to uphold good and evil, to maintain balance. To be the daughter or son of both Life and Death themselves.
Monochrome lives on in the world, as does The Grey. His sword will guide the Speaker. His sword grants everything, yet nothing.
