Chapter 2
Author's Note: This chapter is kinda bad because I didn't write it on my computer so I'm sorry for grammar and lack of plot development XD I'll try to do better next chapter.
Liam is grinning broadly as he closes the door, saying, "Sorry I'm late, my schedule got changed." He scans the room, looking for somewhere to sit. The only seat open is next to me, so he walks over and sits down.
"Hey, Mira," he whispers to avoid the attention of the teacher.
"Hi Liam," I reply just as quietly, surprised that he remembered my name. We both look up at the teacher, who is now handing out our assignment. It's a worksheet, and we're supposed to work on it together.
"Are we going to wake him up?" Liam asks me, nodding his head at Leonard.
"If you can," I answer, putting my name on my paper, knowing that it was stupid to even try to wake that kid.
"Alright, then," he says, and leans across the table to grab Leonard by the shoulder.
"Leo," he says, vigorously shaking the boy's shoulder. "Wake up, man."
Leonard doesn't even move. Liam shakes his shoulder harder, but the most the sleeping boy does is shrug Liam's hand off of his shoulder. At this point, Liam has a rather frustrated expression on his face, and he looked so serious that I crack up.
"What?" he asks defensively.
"Did you honestly think that would work?" I ask, still laughing.
"Well, maybe," he says, looking a bit sheepish. "You could've said something. We could've been working."
"I said that you could try it if you wanted, which you did," I reply. I hold out my paper, which I'd been working on while Liam tried to wake Leonard in vain. "And I'm already half-done."
"Mira," Liam says jokingly in a stern voice. "This is GROUP work. Everyone in the group has to help." He makes a pouting face, which brings back memories of me annoying him as a child. I roll my eyes and say, "Well it's not my fault my group isn't helping me." Liam grins warmly, and our eyes meet. His deep brown eyes gaze into mine, and a shiver goes down my spine. I look away, feeling heat rush to my cheeks, and turn to my paper. "Why don't you do the bottom half of the paper?" My voice is suddenly higher pitched than it had been, and I clear my throat.
"Okay," Liam says, not seeming to notice my sudden awkwardness. Then again, I wasn't looking at his face, so I couldn't really tell. We work in silence for a little while longer, when the bell rings, saving me from continued awkward silence. As I pack up my stuff,
"Here, let me hand in your paper," Liam says, holding out his hand for the paper. I hand it to him, avoiding his gaze. He gives our papers to the teacher. "Thanks," I hear myself say in a normal tone of voice. "See you around." I turn to leave, when Liam says to me "Hey, Mira?"
"Yeah?"
"How are you?" Liam walks next to me now, and I'm thrown off by his question.
"I'm fine," I answer, confusion in my voice. "Why?"
"Just wondering," he says, his expression indiscernible. "Okay, see you later. " He waves to me, and I wave back.
"Bye," I say, turning into the hallway where my locker is. Only when I begin walking to lunch do I realize how fast my heart is beating.
"Are you okay?" Kaylie asks me, snapping me to attention. I was pondering mine and Liam's conversation, since I still wasn't sure what had happened. Why would he ask me how I was? It wasn't like we'd talked at all before today. He probably doesn't even know that my father's dead.
