It was voodoo doctor Earl Marlowe who first told me about selling your soul to the Devil at the crossroads. The knowledge had been handed down to him by an old conjure doctor in the American South, where Earl lived for a number of years during the 1960s.

Making a pact with Satan at the crossroads underpins swamp voodoo, the tradition of results magick which Earl had been initiated into by the old hoodoo conjurers  of the South.

Besides being a voodoo doctor, Earl Marlowe was a blues and world music singer. I used to back him on guitar and we played live dates throughout Britain and the U.S.

We weren’t particularly well known.  But we appeared as musical guests on the odd daytime talk show in Britain and played world music festivals.

Mostly, we played small venues and busked on street corners and on pleasure boat trips.
