Mo looked taken aback. "how did you-."

"From the start. When we first got here, you seemed so relieved to see him." I swallowed back the bile that began to rise. She didn't know we were engaged, she could never know. This girl had been through so much, I couldn't ruin her. I had to let her be with Erick, because I couldn't anyways. I didn't want to be engaged.

Mo smiled and sighed in relief. "Yeah, I guess that was obvious. But I've watched him grow up, and then his parents wanted him to leave and I wanted to punch them in the face. I didn't want him to leave, because he was mine."

"But that's impossible," I pointed out, "You're a witch and he's a shifter. The two mixes can't be mated."

"You were with Quinn."

"That's different." I mumbled.

She sighed. "I know, I'm sorry. But... I just saw us. My vision, we were... Ah, Lana it was the most beautiful thing. He and I, we were free, and we were in Paris, where my mother lived. You know, I've never been anywhere but here."

I tried my best to smile. "I guess your meant to be. But why do you want to protect the people in the town so much? I mean, I get that you need to protect the town, but why the people?"

She gazed out the window. "Lana, I knew the grandparents of the oldest people here. I've watched them grow, I love them all so much."

I stared questionly at her. "And they've never noticed that you haven't aged?"

She shrugged. "Well, I change forms once in a while. I can be any animal, just as long as I stay in the town, I'm ok."

I nodded. "Is that what you did back then?"

She smiled. "Basically."

I stared at the strong witch that I now had a different perspective of. Her life was similar to mine, we were both slaves, and all because of men.

"Just please, don't let Erick make me leave. Because I can't." She begged.

I nodded. "Don't worry, you will all be safe soon."

Mo gave me a shifty glance. "I know what you're planning, and I don't like it at all. I'm tempted to tell someone."

I began to perspire. "No, don't. Please- you don't understand, I need to do this."

She smiled. "I know. This is how it's supposed to happen."

I stared, confused. "Supposed to happen?"

She nodded. "I know how all of this is going to play out."

"Everything?"

"Yep."

"Are you going to tell me?" I asked trying to coax it out.

"If I did, everything would be messed up. And there's a huge penalty for screwing with the future."

"A good future?"

She rose an eyebrow. "A not-telling future."

I gaped at her. "You mean you can't tell me if I'm gonna die?"

"Afraid not. Sorry."

I tried to search her face for any sign of sadness or hopefully, happiness, but I got nothing.

"Keep in touch with me." Mo said standing up. "I have a few things to talk to you about your mother. You know she grew up here."

I shot straight up, wondering what she could possibly know about my mother. "Tell me."

"In good time. I'll tell you her whole life story." She walked to the door and opened it, then turned around to face me. "If you come back alive." Then she disappeared.

"That's not funny!" I shouted after her, but I doubted that she heard me.

Falling back on the couch, I curled up and fell into a worried sleep.

A little girl stood in front of a cross that stood upon wood. A man yelled at the men that were piling on the sticks to stop and they obeyed.

The little girl stepped back as two men hauled in a dirty looking woman who had black tangled hair and an almost black purple dress on. The woman turned to the small girl and smiled weakly.

"I will be fine Morganite. Mommy's fine, and you are too."

Then she was kicked in the ribs, and was pushed against the cross and was tied to it.

The woman looked up at the man who had ordered the men to stop staking the wood. He had a singled tear rush down his cheek, before he yelled out. "Burn witch!"

And the fire was lit, and so was the witch.

The screaming filled the air, making the little girl turn away and cry. I tried to move towards her, but something kept me where I was.

But she couldn't bear it. "Mommy!" She screamed and ran towards the fire, but a man pulled her back, and she ran, until she disappeared into a house.

"It is done." The man who had ordered the fire announced. "The witch is dead."
