On February 26th, 2012, I met someone who has changed my life for the better and who has become one of my role models. His name is Ryan Dunson and he is the lead singer for the band Rookie of the Year. (If you have never heard of them, I strongly recommend you check them out, you won't be disappointed! Anyway back to the story) it all started back in November of 2011, when I started talking to a music promoter in my area and I asked her when a rookie of the Year would be back,
"They'll be back February 26th." She said.
"Really?" I asked, do you know if I'll be able to meet them?"
"I'll make sure of it." She said.
When the show date got closer, I asked her how much the tickets were.
"They're $10 and I have a VIP one for you." She said,
I was honestly shocked. She didn't know me, she just found me through the band's page, but she did however, know how much I loved the band and wanted to meet them. I asked her why she was giving me a VIP pass and she said,
"I want you to get to meet Ryan and hang out with him."
I wanted to cry. A few days later I messaged her back and asked her if she thought I was doing too much for Ryan. I made him a bracelet that said "Team Rookie", a necklace that said "Ryan Rox", a bracelet that said "Rookie Rox", I gave him a review I did on one of his albums for a music class, I made a 5 question interview, i made a poster that said "I love Rookie" with a heart and a poster that said "Team Rookie"and I gave him a bag of jolly ranchers because they're his favorite candy. I also have my CDs for him to sign."
"He'll be very impressed." She said.
"Really?" I asked.
"Yup." She said. "Do you have a poster?" She asked.
"Like one with his picture? No."
"I have one for you." She said.
"How much are they?" I asked.
"Free." Was her reply.
When the day arrived, I left for the concert around 4:30 pm and got to the venue around 6pm. The promoter met me at the door. She introduced herself, and explained that Ryan was running late but he would be here soon. I said okay and went to watch the other bands. Half an hour later she came up to me and said
"Ryan's here honey!"
He came in a few minutes later and introduced himself. He gave me a hug, and when we went to pull away, my hair got caught in his coat zipper. We both laughed as he untangled my hair but I have to admit, it was kind of awkward. I started giving him everything I brought for him, but he asked me if I could hold on to everything because he was just about to play. I said sure and went to go watch him.
When he played his first song "Slow Down" he played it in a campfire style meaning everyone sat on the floor and he sat on a stool and played guitar. During that song, I saw him look over at me a couple of times.
After his set we hung out at his merch table, where he signed my posters, CDs and answered the questions for the interview. He asked me if I could stay, because he was singing with the last band.
"I could get you really close if you want." Ryan said.
I was really confused. I didn't know what he meant. He took me on stage with him because he wanted me to get another perspective of the show!
After the song ended we took pictures and then I had to leave.
"Message me on Facebook and let me know you get home safe, okay?"
I told him I would and hugged him one last time.
