~Chapter Two~
When we pulled up to the house my first thought was: I hate it.
The house itself was a beautiful log home but the thought of me living anywhere but my home was almost impossible for me to comprehend but I was just... apprehensive.
In the front yard there were beautiful maple trees and their leaves were just beginning to turn. There was a tire swing hanging from one of the sturdier branches of one of the trees. I glanced around at the house, trying to feel at home but I just couldn't.
The front porch was spacious and cozy at the same time. I leaned against the banister as my parents and older brother, along with some moving guys, started to take everything into the house. I was too un-muscular to help. Dad had told me I"d just hurt myself or someone else.
I felt absolutely useless as I wandered around the front yard. I walked to the tire swing and tested the rope carefully before placing all my weight on it.
I slowly swung back and forth. Back and forth. I leaned back so that my entire body wa completely horizontal and I just laid there swaying on the swing.
"Boo!" A voice said.
I sat straight upright and screamed at the top of my lungs. My shriek of panic was cut off when I realized that the person who scared me was not a crazy ax murderer but in fact a teenage boy. He looked a bit older than me, maybe Brian's age, and he had long black hair.
His hair curled a bit at the ends and it fell into his eyes. He brushed his hair away and I saw his piercing cobalt blue eyes.
He caught me staring and I looked down with a blush.
"CASSIE! Are you alright? I heard you scream!" Brian came running out of the house with his hockey stick.
"I'm fine!" I said, spinning to face him. "There was a massive spider but that guy got it for me." I hitched my finger at the stranger standing near me.
"Okay." Brian went back into the house.
I turned back to the stranger and he gave me an odd look. "Why didn't you tell him the truth?"
"I figured you liked your face the way it is now." I told him, shrugging easily.
"What do you mean?" He asked, cocking an eyebrow at me.
"A wise eight year old once told me that faily has to stick together. My brother took that to heart." Brian really had. He was overprotective but I still loved him. He was my brother after all.
"Oh really?" There was something in his tone that implied he knew what I was thinking of but I brushed it off. I was six at the time. There was no way this guy knew that boy, Cameron. I'd never seen him again and it's been ten years already. Cam was probably long gone by now.
Two boys came jogging up the street. "Cam!" One of them shouted. His hair was a chestnut color and he had jade green eyes. The other boy had tight blonde curls and his light green eyes still shone with a mischiveious light.
I blinked and looked between all of them.
"It's you again." I said, my eyes darting restlessly between them.
The one I remembered to be Ty spoke up first when he reached Cam and I, "Hey, why'd you take off running like that?"
For a moment all the guys looked at each other then as one they all turned to me. My eyes went wide and I felt a blush warm my cheeks.
"What? Do I have something on my face?" I took the sleeve of my long-sleeved top and rubbed it violently against my cheek.
Cam's hand latched onto my wrist and he pulled my arm away from my face. "There's nothing on your face." He chuckeled a little with his friends. "We're just a little surprised to see you again is all..."
"Oh. I guess that makes sense." Well now don't I just feel stupid. I'm sure my face has got a massive red mark on it now from rubbing it so hard.
"Cassie, can you come here for a moment?" I heard my mother call.
"Coming, Mom!" I yelled over my shoulder. I turned back to the three imposing guys before me. Did they just get taller in the last three seconds or have I just not been paying very close attention? Probably the latter. "Uhm... I'll see you guys at school?"
"See you there." Cam said while the other guys just nodded their heads. I hopped out of the tire swing and climbed the few steps to the porch.
"Yes, Mom?"
"Who were you talking to, Cassie?" she asked, leading me up the stairs to presumably my new room.
"Some old friends, Mom."
~*~Cam~*~
I stared after her for a few moments after she'd left and my mind was reeling. How did she get here?
Oh that didn't even really matter to me! Just hte fact she was here had me starstruck all over again. When I'd seen her before I was too young to know what she was to me. I hadn't matured enough to know. Somehow though a piece of her stuck with me. I thought about her all the time and I never thought I'd see her again.
"Come on, Cam. You can stare at her house some other time. The girls are waiting for us." Ty said, trying to push me forward. Ty and James were still my best friends. When Ty said girls though I remembered where we were going before I saw Cassie swinging. I didn't want to go see the girls anymore.
"You guys go on without me. I'm not in the mood to see the girls."
"What?" James half shouted. "Ten minutes ago that was all you could think about!"
"That was then, this is now. Times have changed, get with the program." I told him.
"Whatever. Stare up at dumb Cassie's house!" James said, obviously annoyed. "Come on Ty. Let's go."
I whirled on James and grabbed him by the collar. Ty followed as I marched him down the street to the pack house. I threw James against the garage door and pointed my finger at his chest.
"You will treat Cassie with respect!" I ordered. He flinched at the harshness in my tone. He bowed his head and I knew he would obey. He had to.
I turned on my heel, ready to go for a run to cool off when James called out to me. "Cam!" I stopped and stood still, not turning around.
After a pause he realised I was waiting for him to speak so he asked one word. "Why?"
I barely turned my head. "Because she's my mate."
