I grabbed a hand full of Miska's white fur from her side. I wore A thick blue jacket with white fur on the end of the sleeves and hood.

"Ree, I don't know where we are anymore." Miska huffed.

I looked at her large white striped face and into her blue eyes.

"I can't smell a scent. The snow hides it."

I could hear dogs barking in the distance.

"Miska!" I gasped.

She looked back at a dog sled coming at us. Fast.

"Climb onto my back. Well have to run this time there's no city to loose them in."

I pulled myself onto her back as she hurried her speed, almost making me fall face first into the snow.

She roared over her shoulder to me. "Look for a cave or anything we could hide in."

I nodded and searched through the white snow that was flying up from Miska's feet as her large paws hit the ground. The snow flew into my cold face piercing my cheeks like needles. I wiped the snow away, and looked up at a mountain we approached.

I pointed to it. "Miska, the mountain could have caves."

Miska huffed and leaned her weight towards the mountain.

"We'll lose them around the mountain."

I looked back not being able to see the sled or hear the dogs at all.

"I think we already have lost them Miska, I don't see them."

"Their sneaky Ree. We'll lose them at the mountain."

I put my cold face to the back of her neck into her long thick fur and looked to the right as she carried me to the mountains.

Miska was my best friend and protector. She kept me away from harm and knew best for me. I was one of the only shifters left, and I had a gift. The gift to talk to animals. Miska was an abnormally big Bengal White Tiger. Also a rare creature, like me. Everyone wanted us, but no one seemed to ever catch us, but it seemed this man chasing us wasn't giving up.

Shirr was a nasty man who couldn't control his anger, Miska says his flaw has helped us more than he knows.

I started a fire in a cold dark cave as Miska laid where her body would allow in the small roofed cave.

"We rise early tomorrow, and head towards Carria City. We should have friend there."

I nodded.

Carria City was one of many City's still alive with humans that descended from shifters, and many were still loyal to any shifter and would help us when we needed it.

I heard howling and glanced at Miska who raised her head to listen.

"Wolves. We are safe, his dogs sound different." I said.

Miska laid her head back down and sighed.

I crawled over to her and patted her side.

"We'll be fine. The spirits won't allow us to be hurt, or separated. Father came to me in a dream, Miska, and told me we will find friends on this journey, and they will have wings to fly us away. That they will be like us."

I whispered.

"Like us?"

I nodded. "Maybe we aren't the last ones after all."

Miska flicked her tail. "Don't be silly child, I am the last of me, the spirits told me I was only saved to protect you."

"And that you have! But maybe someone else out there is of need to be protected as well."

"Maybe, but not by one of me." Miska said firmly.

"Are you scared you won't be as special if you aren't the last one anymore?"

"Don't be foolish."

I sighed. "Well you'll always be special Miska."

She rolled over. "Go to sleep, we have a long day ahead of us."

I nodded and laid my head on her side and stretched my cold legs out so my feet would warm by the fire.

She was right, tomorrow would be a very long day.
