‘Hey Don. What’s up?’ I asked cheerfully.
‘I just needed the bathroom and somebody told me this was the nearest.’ He laughed.
‘Oh sure, see the corridor behind me? Just go through those doors and the Gents is on your left.’ I smiled at him, as he didn’t respond.
‘Thanks,’ he said as if to have shaken himself out of a trance, ‘Oh and I didn’t catch your name.’
‘I’m Cassidy.’ I said with a huge smile. Maybe too huge. He let out a small laugh.
‘Hey! You’re my brother’s girlfriend! Yeah! Her name was Cassidy. She had black hair. Pretty. A bit quiet and I remember Trent telling me about Crystal! Oh why didn’t I remember Crystal! Trent had said she was a little loud,’ he said with a chuckle, ‘Wow, I never thought my big brother could pull such a lovely woman. He hasn’t spoken to me in about seven years though. I remember when he first came to me and said ‘hey bro! I got this huge crush on this cute girl at school!’ he laughed harder. The floor fell from beneath me. My mouth dropped. My eyes widened. I took in a silent deep breath. I cleared my throat trying to make sense of what Don had just said. This wasn’t true. There was only the two of them! Not one more! What was I going to do with three of them! Every vein in my body bubbled with worry, my skull smashed against my brain, trying to remember any mention of the name Don.
‘So-so you haven’t seen or spoken to Trent in seven years?’
He nodded, sadly though. ‘I know! It’s been such a long time! I’ve been studying over in America. I haven’t seen my girlfriend Tracy either. Even though we broke up I still miss her you know? And I still have been longing to see her.’ He shrugged rubbing the back of his neck, ‘but it was nice to finally meet you Cassidy Louise Milward.’ He gave me a quick smile and a nod of the head before brushing past me. He stopped just as he was about to cross to the corridor behind me.
‘Oh, and Cassidy. I know my brother can be a dick sometimes. Just ask Joshua. I’d say he got the worse end of it only because he’s the youngest. Trent, being the oldest always got to do whatever he wanted.’ he gave me another genuine smile and walked away.
‘There isn’t another one of you guys is there?’ I asked quietly, calling to him.
‘No love, it’s just us three. Donatello, Trent and Joshua. Wow! Weird names!’ he laughed. ‘You see, I left after Trent got taken away. I thought it was for the best.’ He gave me a meek smile.
‘I thought you had a sister?’ His hand made its way to the door handle and he stood there, head bowed with his side to me.
‘Yeah, I thought I had a sister too Cassidy. But as we all know sometimes family is just there to let you down.’ After a long pause he said, ‘Wish me luck with seeing my brothers in seven years! I’ll see you around Cassidy and it was great meeting you.’
‘You too Donatello.’ I whispered, barley audible.
I dragged my limp and lifeless body through the door to be greeted by a jam-packed Coffee Shop with Trey perched onto a stool at the counter. He grinned at me with a cup of coffee in front of him. His grin slightly faded when he asked. ‘What’s wrong Cass?’ I looked at him in silence for a moment.
‘It’s Don.’ I said breathlessly.
His eyebrows crossed in confusion. I had to tell Crystal and Kyle as soon as possible.
‘I’m sorry but who the fuck is Don?’ he said his anger bubbling.
‘Don. Don is a man that I met this morning whiles I was serving behind the counter.’ I pushed away from the door handle and rested my palms on the counter in front of Trey. ‘Don is their older brother!’ I said in dismay. Trey’s eye spilled out confusion. After a beat of silence, ‘Don’s what? Who’s brother?’
