SOMEWHERE IN NEVADA

Machines whirred and buzzed in the background as the baby was laid onto the medical table. The doctor checked the baby's chart to confirm that they had the right one. "Sarah Davis. Born November 14. Age: 8 days." Yup, that was the one. Out in the waiting room, behind the armed guards were Mr and Mrs Davis, under sedation. As he looked at their bodies lying in the chairs, he wondered once again, "Is what I'm doing really right?" And for the third time, he went to go talk to the organization's board. The doctor went out, passed between the guards, and headed for the room where the CEO and other members of the board sat around a table. He wiped the sweat that was beading up on his forehead as he approached. As he grabbed the doorknob, he stopped and wondered if what he was about to do was really worth the punishment he would have to endure. He steeled himself, then opened the door.

"Are you still working on homework, Andy?" Emily typed into her phone. She was lying in bed, texting her three best friends, Andy, Mia, and Dean. Andy is the kind of guy who can't say no. Short, kind of nerdy, with curly brown hair and green eyes, him and Emily have been friends for years. Mia is the exact opposite of Andy, which was ironic since they were twins. Athletic, sporty, and funny are the three best words to describe her. She has long, brown hair, green eyes, and a huge smile that warms your heart. Dean is a newer student at San Diego High, as he was enrolled only last year. He's the cool guy, with black hair and brown eyes. Even though he sometimes acts like a tough guy, he's never too busy to hang out with his friends. And, needless to say, Emily would prefer it if the two of them were more than friends. Emily has short, blonde hair, freckles, and bright blue eyes. Most adults said she could be a model, but she didn't really care about fashion, clothes, looks in general. What she did care about was video games. She was an avid gamer, and loved to play video game for hours with her friends.

"Yeah, still working... I hate school," Andy texted back, and was then followed up almost instantly by Mia, saying,
"Oh come on! It's not that bad! ;)"
"Oh yes it is! You're just saying that because you're good at math. What do you think Emily?"
"Well, it depends... what kind of problems are they?" And the conversation went on for another hour or so in the same manner. When the talking had pretty much died down, Emily looked at her clock, and saw that it was almost midnight. Suddenly really worried that her mom was going to walk in, she frantically texted her friends goodnight. "Hey guys, I've got to go to bed. My mom will kill me if I'm really tired tomorrow."
"Ok see you tomorrow!"
"Goodnight!"
"Cool. Night."

Emily turned off her phone and set it beside her bed. She drifted to sleep, but immediately awoke in a hospital bed. Confused, she tried to get up, but couldn't move. In fact, she could hardly see either. She tried to speak, but nothing came out. It almost felt like she wasn't herself anymore. Like she was in someone else's body. Just then, a doctor, at least, she assumed it was a doctor, she couldn't really see him that well walked in. The doctor walked up to the edge of the table, and mumbled something Emily couldn't understand. Suddenly, he picked up a syringe from the tray and stuck it into her. Luckily, she didn't feel anything, but she did instantly wake up from her nightmare.

Once the doctor had stuck Sarah with the tranquilizing serum, he turned her over, revealing the portion of her head marked with a large 'x'. He always dreaded this part the most. If only the board members had let him operate later. Or on a different child. Sarah was a baby. Born just two weeks ago. He hated himself every time he performed this operation. So, for the ninth time, the doctor grabbed his scalpel, and began to cut open Sarah's head.
