It all began on a warm Sunday evening. Jessica and her boyfriend Jeffery sat on the tall brick wall at the end of their street. Jess and Jeff had been together for 2 years. They sat in silence, gazing at the setting sun in the distance. "Beautiful, isn't it?" Jess whispered, resting her head against Jeff's shoulder. Jeff nodded, "not as beautiful as you!"
Jess giggled and planted a small kiss on Jeff's cheek. Her long blond hair flew behind her and her emerald eyes twinkled in the red sunlight. Suddenly, Jeff became serious. "Jess...I need to tell you something."
Jess looked up at his bright blue eyes. "Huh? What is it?" She asked slightly worried. Jeff brushed his long brown fringe out of his eyes. "Jess...we're moving."
"M...moving? Moving house?" Jess tried to clarify. Jeff shook his head and Jess let out a sigh of relief. "No...we're moving states." Jeff continued.
Jess couldn't take it in. She wouldn't. "You're moving to another state?! Please Jeff! Please say this is a joke!" Jeff just shook his head.
Jessica started to tear up and Jeff couldn't stand to see her like this. So he wouldn't see her like that. He leant in and planted a kiss on her lips and Jess kissed back, tears streaming down her face. Then he slid off the wall and walked home; head hung low.
SLAM! The door flung shut behind Jeff. "Jeff, sweetheart? Is that you?" Jeffrey's mother, Margaret called from the kitchen. "Yeah, it's me, the best boyfriend in the world!" Jeff replied in a sarcastic manner. Margaret appeared in the doorway. "I'm guessing you broke the news to Jess. What did she say?"
"She didn't say anything but she was really upset. Do we really have to move mom? What's wrong with this place?" Jeff protested.
Margaret took hold of her son by the shoulders. "You know why, honey! Dad got a brilliant new job that's really well paid! We're moving to a really nice state and, oh Jeff! You should see the size of our house! It's enough for a family of 13! You're new school is really posh with..." Margaret went on.
Jeff just sighed and pushed past her. "Jeff, where are you going?" Margaret called after him.
"To find Liu." Jeff said, no emotion in his voice.
Jeff found Liu in his bedroom. He was sitting in his bed, listening to music. "Hey Liu." Jeff shook his brother so he would listen.
Liu's dark green eyes fluttered open and saw Jeff leaning over him. "Oh. Hey."
"Can you believe it Liu? We're moving! I like it here! When am I ever going to see Jess again?" Jeff blurted out! If there was someone who he could trust, it was his older brother Liu. Liu was moderately well built for a 14 year old with shoulder length dark brown hair and dark green eyes. He pulled his earphones out and sighed. "Jeff, you'll be able to live without Jess for a while! Besides, you'll probably find a newer, hotter and well...better girlfriend at our new school!" Liu didn't really like Jess. He used to love her but she rejected him and said yes to Jeff instead. Jeff ignored the insult said about his girlfriend and tried to change the subject.
"Liu? Do you want to move?" Jeff asked. Liu sighed and hung his head. "No. Not at all, Jeff. But we can't say no to this. Dad's gonna be loaded, Jeff! Think about how awesome that would be!"
Jeff knew that Liu was hiding something. I knew Liu far too well.
But instead of persecuting, Jeff nodded and left to pack his stuff in silence.
The following morning, there was a knock at the door.
Margaret rushed to open the door and wasn't the least bit surprised to see Jessica, tearful and holding a present. "Is...Jeff here?" Jess asked in between sniffles. Margaret smiled and ushered her inside. "He's up in his room sweetie. Why don't you go and wake him up?"
Jess climbed up the stairs and knocked on Jeff's door. "Go away." She heard a grunt from inside the room. "Jeff. It's me, Jessica. Can I come in?"
There was no reply. There were a few muffled sobs, or at least they sounded like sobs. Jess would not stand to hear her boyfriend cry. Holding her gift in her left hand she used her free hand and pushed the door open hard.
She saw Jeff. He was holding a knife. His sleeve rolled up. He was self harming.
Jess dropped the gift and ran over to him. "JEFF! What the hell are you doing?!" She screamed.
Jeff looked up at her with tearful blue eyes. "I don't want to leave." He sobbed. Jess froze and stared at her boyfriends quivering body. She sat down next to him and placed her arm around him. Jeff sobbed into her shoulder.
"I...I know, Jeff. I know you don't want to leave. I know...we may never see each other again. But we can cope.
