"All first years, over here!" I heard a deep, ruff male voice shout over the chaotic platform. The train had, after several boring hours, arrived at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. I had spent most of the trip reading in several of my spell and potion books, or sleeping. I had also thought a lot. My family's history was one of those thoughts.
My family were descendants after King Ludvig the 14th of France. After the revolution in 1848 he made a wise choice and left France, not wanting to end up as Marie Antoinette and King Ludvig the 16th. In England he met my great, great, great, great, great grandmother. The two of them had instantly fallen in love and he had given her the small, squared stone I now bore as a gift and sign of their undying love. It was rumored that the stone had a magical power on the inside, put there by Ludvig and my grandmother, Maria, themselves as they were both wizards. After their marriage they had decided to change their last name because of Ludvig's original background. They could not risk being followed. Together they had 5 children where only one of them survived, Louise. Maria gave Louise the Blackwood stone and told her to again give it to her daughter or son. This became a tradition and right before my mother had died, she gave it to me as a sign of the undying love she always would have for me, or something like that.
Blackwood was a powerful name. That was something everybody knew and feared because of their cooperation with Voldemort. Also their friendship with the Malfoys made the name even more famous. My family was rich and since the death of my parents, the whole fortune was now mine. Since I was the grand, grand, grand, grand, granddaughter of Kind Ludvig I was theoretically a royalty. I was the new Mistress Blackwood...
I fiddled with the stone on my necklace while I read in one of my books. I had also got time to think about the sorting. It was said that you get an old, filthy hat on your head, and it looks inside your brain to decide which house would be the best fit for you. There are 4 of them: Ravenclaw, the house of learning, wisdom and wit. Hufflepuff, the house of the hard-working, friendly and loyal ones. Gryffindor, the house of the brave and daring. And last, my personal favourite; Slytherin, the house of the ambitious and cunning.
"First years! Come on, we don't have all day!" the voice shouted again, and since it was my first time here, I decided to follow the first years. I got pushed in all directions by other students as they were either rushing for some boats by the lake or towards large carriages in the other end of the platform. I heard the loud voice calling from the lake and decided to follow the stream of small first-graders. As I closed in on the boats I saw who the loud shouting came from. The person was huge! Probably half giant or something. He also had a frizzy, brown beard, and put together with his outfit: a mole-skin coat with huge pockets, dirty, dark brown pants and boots, he truly looked like a character drawn right out of one of my fairy-tale books.
I bordered one of the boats filled with 11-year-olds. Lucky me, I thought ironically and rolled my eyes as some of the boys were throwing a small chocolate frog between them. Suddenly the boats started moving and I quickly took a seat beside a brunette girl. She stared up at me in the darkness of the evening. "Why are you so tall?" she suddenly questioned and tilted her head. I gave her a small smile and replied, "I am a fifth-year". She frowned, "a fifth-year? What are you then doing in the boats? You are supposed to take the carriages" she told me knowingly. "I know, but this is my first year here actually. I was transferred from Beauxbatons academy of magic" I lied. "Oh, I see" was all she said before our attention was taken by something else. Hogwarts in it's most gorgeous state. It was breathtaking.
The huge stone castle was placed on the top of a hill, giving the prettiest view ever. All of the windows were lit, including the towers, and shone along with the stars on the sky. The castle was reflected in the black water of the lake, giving it a mysterious touch.
