Chapter 1
"Drive it! Drive it in! Right! No! Left! More Left! Center! That's it you got it! My eyes flickered over to where my brother was and in that split second, I face planted straight into the water. I took one quick breath before my surfboard flipped over on top of me, making me go slightly underwater. The cool ocean water felt good against my tanned face. I'd been out in the heat all day practicing for the last time in my hometown before I move, so the water felt especially nice. Embracing the last bit of cold freshness, I popped my head out of the water and looked to where the sand began. My brother, Colin, with his brown hair windblown and tousled and his annoyed expression, looked out at the water and slowly shook his head. I sighed, knowing he was nappy.
With a quick roll of my eyes, I jumped back on my surfboard and paddled back to shore. My brother was quickly tapping his watch that was situated on his right wrist, while looking me in the eyes and shaking his head. I picked up my surfboard and dragged it onto the shore throwing it in front of my brother's feet. "Well?" I asked, he looked up to me when I finished talking. "Well you managed to land nicely, I'll give you that." I groaned and grasped my, now very wet, blonde hair. "It's like I'm getting worse! How is it possible? Tomorrow I will be in my new hometown with a new surf and I can't even be good at surfing at the beach I grew in! How is it possible?" Colin shrugged.
"I honestly don't even know, you're just not trying as hard as enough. You're taking it to likely. Remember you only have a month of practicing before the competition, remember this is worldwide, You need to show these people what your made of, because everyone knows you can beat them you just need the practice, and the confidence. I know you can Tesh everyone does. Just get your head in the game a bit more, eh?"
I was currently training for a worldwide surfing competition, this type of competition would guarantee me the best surfer, but what makes it harder?, I'm moving to California today. My brother is my coach. I'm actually pretty lucky that I get him as a coach because he's coached many professionally surfers in the past, and, when I was probably around five years old, he decided I was going to be the next champion that he'll coach, and most likely the last before he retires. We were already so close to me being a champion, I mean, allot of people know who I am, I'm in the news allot, surf magazines, ect.. But I want to make it the next step.
Remembering back to the first time I stepped foot on a surfboard was so funny to think about. I remember that my dad signed me up for surfing class and I was not to happy about it. I wasn't a big surfer and I didn't know a thing about it. After a week or two I began to like surfing. I was finally getting the hang of it and the surfing instructor called me a 'natural'. My heart swelled so much from hearing that, and in that moment, I knew this is what I wanted to do. Even if I was only five, I knew surfing was my passion. Ever since then my brother was drilled me and taught me everything he knows about surfing.
I never really minded being pushed so hard by my brother. Sure, it was a little frustrating at times because sometimes he doesn't understand that I actually have friends and a life, but usually it's worth it. As long as I'm doing what I love, or am with somebody I love, I'm happy.
"I'm sorry. It's just... I don't know. With having to move and pack I've just been slack lately. As soon as I'm used to my new life, I'll pick my slack up again, I promise." Colin gave me the I-wont-believe-it-until-I-see-it expression. "I'll give you one week to move in until your start your training again". I contemplated this for a second. Something in that sentence just didn't sound right. "Wait you said I'll be training" I asked with a confused look that settled onto my face, "Yep I'm moving with you". I screamed when he said this jumping up and down.
"Are you coming or not?" Colin asks as he starts to walk away from where we were standing. "I'm going to stay for a while. Just kind of mull things over with the ocean. Kay?" I hollered out to my brother, who was already halfway to the stairs. He threw me thumbs up, without turning around. "One o'clock we're leaving all the stuff is packed, you have 30 minutes until you need to come get ready" He yelled back.
I smiled at the relationship me and my brother had. My brother was not only my coach but also my dad. At the age of 10 my Dad got sick of use and then a year later my mother gave up, one day she was sitting on the coach, next minute later never saw her again. So for a whole seven years my brother has been my only family that I can trust, and that has stayed with me.
My feet dragged through the warming sand. My turquoise, and white surfboard was still laying on the beach, right where I left it. Beyond that was a bright blue ocean. Big, untouched, undisturbed, yet, a whole mutant, beautiful world.
The scents circling around me were sweet, warm smell. The environment shifted and adjusted with every little movement made. The sun, almost down, was visibly on fire down the horizon.
I inhaled deeply, filling my lunges completely with as much oxygen I could handle and dived into the water, my hands, tightly together, cutting through the water and making a perfect pathway into a new world. My lungs began to burn, just becoming conscious of my lack of air.
An hour later I closed the front door of my old house for the last time. As I walked down the driveway I looked backwards and blew a kiss to it before I opened the car down and sat down.
