Sniffing I wiped my eyes once more before covering it with concealer trying to hide the bags under my eyes and the disconsolate sadness within them.

I faked a smile trying to cheer my self up yet I failed. My fake smile died to a frown. I sighed, my life sucks.

"Claire! Hustle up darling! We're gonna be late for the lunch!"

I sighed, "Coming mom!"

Rolling my eyes I grabbed my purse and wearily trudged down the stairs. My mom was sitting in the dining room, Vicki, my best friend, beside her.

"Claire, are you ok? How are you?" Vicki asked frantically while standing up and walking towards me.

"Do I look ok?" I tilted my headed pressing my lips together, willing myself not to cry.

She shook her head but hugged me nonetheless, "He's a dick,"

I chuckled a bit, "Language Vicki,"

She withdrew from the hug and sighed, "Claire... You know I'm here right? You gotta cheer up! You know what they say: a day without happiness is like a year with vickiness!"

"Yeah," I said stretching out the word, "No one in particular says that, it's just you,"

She gave me the look. Notice I said the look.

"Cmon guys, the food won't wait for us," my mom said rubbing her stomach.

I nodded and we all headed out to our van, after piling in Vicki switched on the radio leaving a faint background of music streaming out of the speakers.

"Mom, who will be at the lunch?" I asked twiddling my fingers together, that's a sign when I'm nervous.

"Don't worry hun, it's probably gonna be us the Smiths and the Browns," she tried to assure me. "Suffice to say that it's only family and a couple of friends, kay?"

I sighed, at least he isn't in the Smith or the Brown family.

"Look its adequate to feel nervous Claire, just remember that he won't be there," Vicki looked back at me from her place at the front seat. "Plus it's New Year's Day today, it's the first day of 2016!"

I cracked up a smile, "Yeah, your both probably right,"

They were totally wrong.

As we reached our destination we got out of the car and my mom immediately began walking to the house greeting people on her way.

"Well there goes my mom!" I huffed, "Soon enough I'll be alone,"

"No you won't, you got me, cmon," Vicki interlocked our arms and began skipping to the house.

I halted in my steps, "Vix..as much as I really love you, I'm not skipping, can we just walk?"

"Claire...as much as I hate being called a smelly medicine, I wanna get to the house fast...there's food," she whined slightly stomping her foot.

I rolled my eyes and began skipping with her to the house that held the lunch ceremony.

We walked through the long halls of the house before reaching a thin transparent glass door, we opened it to reveal a large back yard. There were tables which were lined against the curbs, a beautiful embroidered cloth covering them with the buffet of food sitting on top of it. The trees were covered with a sprinkle of snow although the ground was clean green so it must've been sprinkled on with some kind of machine. The chairs, though, were scattered in the middle of the back yard, as if it just got lost with beauty of the place. There was a chill in the air, as if warning every one that something was going to happen, either good or bad.
