!!! Warning for cancer and sadness!!!

---

"Alfred?" I looked up from my food to meet the eyes of a nurse. I'd worked with her a few times, but she mostly worked around our boss. I hummed in response, carrying on eating my hamburger. "The boss says he wants to talk to you after you've eaten your lunch you should head to his office." She said.

"Hmm? What does he want to talk to me about?" I asked curiously.

"I don't know." The nurse grinned. "Maybe you're in trouble?"

"I hope not," I said. I currently worked in the children's ward at the local hospital. I helped out with the young children, normally between the ages of 6 to 13. I did nothing special. I was in college studying my doctor degree until my family had some issues and I had to drop out. I didn't have enough experience to get the job I wanted, but they did let me have a job in the children's ward. Maybe I'd messed up and I was in trouble with my boss. As I finished the rest of my lunch I made my way to his office. I knocked on the door.

"Come in." A deep voice sounded from inside. I opened the door.

"You wanted to see me sir?" I said walking up to the foot of the desk.

"Ah, yes. You've worked here for a year now haven't you, you have good experience, no?" He said. I nodded.

"Yes, sir."

"We're running out of doctors, and recently a girl was transferred here for special care. Since your good with children and you've partially studied a degree, I'm counting on you to look after her. You think you can handle it?" My boss explained. He handed me a clipboard with the girl's information. The picture in the top left showed a little girl with (H/C) hair and (E/C) eyes. Her name was (F/N) (L/N), age 6. She'd been diagnosed with cancer a week ago. Poor girl...

"I can handle it, sir," I said handing him back the clipboard. He smiled.

"Thanks, Alfred, you'll start tomorrow." I nodded and was dismissed. Soon it was the end of the day. I'd always worked with a variety of children and I never really knew any of them for that long. They never had anything serious like cancer, so they'd be in and out the hospital pretty quick. I was working with one other doctor that he didn't know. He worked the weekends while I worked the weekdays. This was going to be different, but part of me was excited.

I stood at the door of (F/N)'s room. It was the first day of the new position. I knocked on the door and slowly opened it. (F/N) was sitting in the plain white hospital bed, staring out the window. Her gaze travelled towards me. I gave my best smile and walked towards her.

"Hey (F/N)! My names Alfred, I'll be looking after you on weekdays." I said kneeling down at her bedside.

"It's nice to meet you, Mister Alfred." She said politely.

"So (F/N), what do you do for fun?" I said trying to make conversation. She was only 6, it was to depressing to talk about how she was sick.

"I like playing outside, and drawing." She said.

"What do you like to draw?" I asked. She picked up a notepad on the bedside cabinet and flicked through a couple of pages and showed me her most recent drawing. At the top, she'd written 'Peapel i Like'. Her handwriting and spelling was like that of any other child, people misspelt and the 'I' uncapitalised. Underneath was a drawing.

"That's my mom, my dad and my little brother." She said pointing at each of the drawings. I found them cute. "And then there's me." She finished. In the background was a red house, she'd drawn different coloured flowers underneath and beside the house. This was the girl I'd be looking after for the next couple of weeks.
