"Y-you want me to come with you to Africa!? Bloody hell, why sir?" I exclaimed, surprise written across my face.
"Well if you don't want to stick around here and essentially not do anything, then you can join me tomorrow in going to Africa."
"But what for!?"
"Had you not wanted to run away earlier?" So he remembered.
"I had. But I wasn't thinking of a place like Africa! That's too far!"
"Well then where else would you go?"
"I don't know! I had plans to go see three of my friends helping me out with this, but I had to read that newspaper and find out that you were alive." I finished scathingly. But thank god that you are, lest I be put into misery with that blasted man I am to be married to! I thought viciously and almost grinned.
"Well you have no need to meet up with them now do you?"
"Of course I do! What, you think that I'm just going to dawdle after you without telling my best friends where I am!?"
"Is that not what you had done before?" I sucked in a breath. How does he know!?
"Listen to me sir." I stood up and pointed a finger in his face. "I refuse to leave my dearest friends and venture off to Africa for who knows how long. I had heard you! You said that you didn't know how long you are to stay there, all of it being dependent on the labourers working on the canal!"
"Indeed. But if they were to work fast and I came back early, what would you do?"
"I... That's completely destroying the point! I'm talking about if they didn't!"
"And I'm talking about if they did. What are you trying to prove?"
"I am trying to prove the fact that if I went to Africa with you in the morning tomorrow and the workers weren't working as fast as you wanted them to, then you are obviously going to stick around and force them to work harder and faster. And that would mean that I would have to do the same as well. I would really like to not do that."
Silence. Then,
"I thought you liked some adventure. Dangerous prospects, seeing the world. I am offering you just that, and yet you refuse me." My jaw dropped. He remembered that!? But I never told him! Had I?
"Are you trying to manipulate me to go?"
"Possibly." I gritted my teeth. I noticed how the tables had turned currently. Before, I had been the one begging to go some place and he would be the one refusing. Now, he was the one asking, persuading me to go. And I was the one refusing.
"Give me a minute." I said, becoming irritated now. I turned away and as I did, I saw Mr. Ambrose pull out his pocket watch. At that moment, I had wanted nothing more to do than to slap him silly. But I restrained myself harshly.
Think about it Lilly. A voice said inside my head. If you were to not go tomorrow, you'd stay here, meet up with Flora, Patsy and Eve, go home and do absolutely nothing. And then the day afterwards, you would obviously have no work, nor would there be a point to visit the girls again and do nothing, just continue making a circle around your upcoming fiasco with His Lordship. Would it not be best if you were away from London and in Africa, a place you have never seen before? And there, at least something interesting would be available to witness. I chewed on my lip, and knew that this would be the perfect time to leave London. I was getting sick of seeing it so often. I need something new. Fresh. Spontaneous.
"Fine." I finally said. "I'll come with you."
"Two minutes." He stated.
"I'm sorry?"
"That took you two full minutes. No seconds in between."
"And that matters because...?"
"It takes me only thirty seconds to make a decision."
"I'll have you know that it will take me only five seconds to slap you." I countered, annoyed.
"Well if you are completely sure that you are going to come tomorrow, come earlier than usual. And now bring me file box 39XV778."
"Blast you!" I said, before whirling around and taking out his request.

I stared at the wall. I clutched the bedsheets closer to me and then squeezed my eyes shut. Like a ghost, I felt the feel of Mr. Ambrose's arms around me and I winced when the face of Lord Dalgliesh swam before my mind's eye. I refuse to let the marriage take place! I vowed to myself. I don't want to be tied to anybody, let alone him! I will be a free, independent and strong woman until the night of my death! I will not succumb to a terrible fate!
One of my hands let go of the bedsheets and it covered my mouth. Why had I not said no!? Why had I done what I did? I should have said no! I should have run away! "I should have slapped him!" I blurted, sitting upright. Tears started forming in my eyes for some unknown reason. I have done wrong. I have not sinned, but in my beliefs, it is one.
I fell back onto my pillow, crying freely. What even!? Why am I crying? I should not be!
But you have betrayed your beliefs and back stabbed three of your friends in a sense. A little voice said in my head.
"Shut up!" I said into the pillow and continued crying.
I have a couple options left. Tomorrow I leave and join him on a venture to Africa. I do not know how long I will stay, but when I come back, more than one person will be waiting expectantly for me. And what will I say then? I could mentally prepare myself now. Begin to, at least. But when the time comes...
The thought was left unfinished.

"Alright Mr. Linton. You are set to go then?" I nodded. "And you won't back out now?"
I snorted. "Have you not met me? I refuse to waste away my life while you have all the fun."
"But what we're about to do and where we are to go to, fun is not the right word to use Mr. Linton." I waved him off.
"Yeah, yeah. Tell me about that another day. Let's go!" Mr. Ambrose shrugged just a millimetre before getting gracefully into the chaise. Using the very same cane he always used before, he knocked on the roof.
"You know the destination. Go!"
"Yes sir!" The driver cracked the reins and we were off. I felt a grin creep up onto my face. Another adventure awaits me! Yes!
