Kaitlyn's POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mmmmhmmmm. Kaitlyn thought. That didn't go well. I had just met a lovely lady who talked to me a bit, then said to go and come back the next day and she will decide my fate. And my "best friend" didn't seem to care.
By the time I got home, I was really mad. Really mad. But when I went up to my room, there was a note on my bedside table. I went over. It read;
The flower. It's the last way to survive. I'll explain later. Shile, xxx.
I was kind of relieved. She did bother to tell me, and I was satisfied because it would've annoyed me. Really, it would.
I woke the next day feeling better. I decided to forgive Shile, because there's nothing she can do about me dying. Then I remembered my parents. Did they know?
"Kaitlyn!" Dad called cheerfully. "Come down to breakfast. We have a little surprise for you!" I rushed down the stairs in a dressing gown and my hair in a mess. "I'm here!" I gasped as I ran into the kitchen. My parents let out a few soft giggles. I joined in.
"How was graduation? I guess you decided to go off to Shile's place after, right?" Graduation. Oh no.. I thought. "Oh, yea, that. It was...um...fine, I guess. I don't understand why people make such a big deal out of it, though."
They kind of burst into a fit of laughter. "W-what's up?" They glanced at each other, then back at me. In a soft voice, my mom said, "Sweetie, we know you didn't attend your graduation. And we know why." "Then why were you laughing?" I asked, a bit hurt.
"Because, your lying is so bad. But back to the serious matter. Yes, we knew this would happen. We just hoped that we could've spent more time with you. It's like we never see you anymore. And today..."
Her voice trailed off and she shuddered. I didn't blame her though. I looked down. "Sorry," I whispered. "I've been so selfish lately. I deserve what's going to happen to me." My dad put a hand on my shoulder and squeezed it. "You've been a wonderful kid to raise. We were so lucky to have you. We don't deserve you."
"You deserve much more," I finished for them. "So, what's the surprise?" I asked, trying-and failing-to sound upbeat. I was never good at changing the subject.
My parents looked at each other sadly. "There was none. We made it up so we could talk to one last time." Mom said. Then I remembered the note Shile left me.
"There might be one way to survive this. But it's extremely dangerous and I don't know how or where to get it.." I hated seeing it, but there was a glint of hope in both my parents' eyes. I didn't want to break their hearts. Hope is such a fragile thing. So easy to loose.
