“Charlotte Eleni Perry stop this behavior right now!” I heard Tony’s stern voice.
I know he hated being stern with her, but I know he would when he had to. I bit my lip as I listened, it would be his first time having to actually be this way with her. Instead of me being “the bad guy” it was his turn.
“But daddy I don’t wanna sleep!” She cried as she laid on the floor, her face red and blotchy from crying.
Her birthday was tomorrow and she was too excited to sleep, but because it was getting late she was getting cranky and therefore throwing a temper tantrum which I thought she had already outgrown.
“Charlotte you can’t have your birthday party tomorrow if you keep behaving this way. That means no presents, no cake or ice cream, and no fun. That’s not what birthday princesses do! Now come on, stop acting like this and let’s go to sleep.” Tony tried to reason.
“No!”
“Yes!”
“No!”
“Charlotte!”
“You’re being mean daddy! I hate you!” My eyes widened.
Tony’s face may have looked angry, but his eyes were hurt. I was right about to smack her little bottom for talking to her daddy like that, but Tony just stood up from his crouched position and left the living room to go outside. Charlotte threw herself around and started crying more. I sighed. I felt really bad for Tony.
“Charlotte Eleni Perry what on earth gives you the right to talk to your daddy like that? You do not treat people like that and I most certainly never taught you the word hate. You do not use that word in this household, especially to your daddy or I. You really hurt his feelings.” I stated sternly as I picked her up off the ground.
She cried into my chest as I hugged her.
“I’m sorry momma I didn’t mean it!”
“You know better than to act like this Charlotte.”
“I didn’t mean to!”
“Well now you need to fix this.” She sniffled as I wiped her face.
“I go make daddy a card.”
I nodded and she went over to her arts and crafts supplies. I told her to stay put and not leave that spot as I walked outside, shutting the French doors behind me. Tony was standing with his back to me, his arms crossed over his chest as he looked up at the dark sky, the stars twinkling brightly.
I walked up to him quietly and wrapped my arms around his waist from behind, hugging him tightly. I felt him sigh as I rested my head on his back.
“Tony…”
“It’s fine Allison.” He muttered.
“No it isn’t, she had no right to talk to you like that. I should have swatted her butt.” He shook his head.
“That wouldn’t have done any good…”
“But she hurt your feelings.”
“She didn’t mean it.” He sounded so sad.
I heard him sigh again before he turned around to face me. I hugged him tightly as I kept my arms around his waist and he hugged me back, rubbing my shoulders and back.
“But she shouldn’t have said that, I never taught her that word.” I looked up at him, perching my chin on his chest. He shrugged.
“Oh Tony…”
