No one dare enter the house. The snake-like mark that flew above it told them all that they needed to know; he'd come and the two familiar people that lived there, and their child, were killed. But still, something wasn't right, something felt different. It was the dark-haired man that startled Mrs Rendich, who was peering through her window in sadness. She knew the Potters for quite some time, even went to school with them. She couldn't accept that they were dead; she couldn't accept that they were killed. And she didn't understand why some stranger would rush into their home. Maybe he knew them? And at that thought she cried. Poor Lilly, James and little Harry Potter, and poor friend of the Potters. She turned away from the window and wept to herself.
A new figure appeared out the front of what was left of their home. He had long silver hair and beard; he was very old. Albus Dumbledore looked at the house with solemn eyes, for he too understood the fate of the Potters. But it was the unmistakeable sound of a crying child that made him run into the house, full of hope.
The inside of the house was burned, although there was no fire, and furniture was wrecked. The walls were stained with charcoal, which contrasted against the once stark white walls. Albus treaded up the staircase, careful not to tread on any splinted wood or broken glass, and rounded the first corner to find the body of James Potter, with his arms splayed across the ground. Albus could only imagine that this was his attempt to protect his family, for he hadn't a chance to arm himself with a wand. Albus bent down and closed James's eyes, as his own tears started to flood down his face.
"Rest now." He whispered. Once again it was the cry of a child that caught Albus's attention and shattered the silence. He stood up and walked into the baby-blue coloured room.
"Severus," Albus whispered, as he stared at the agonised face of his dear friend; Severus Snape. He had his arms wrapped around the still body of Lilly Potter.
"Oh, Severus I-"
"You said you'd keep her safe." He sobbed. Albus had never seen him cry before and he didn't know what to do. He knew he couldn't help him, even try comfort him, because it would never help him get over the loss of the one person he ever loved. Albus was at a loss of what to do.
The high pitched wail came from behind them. They both stood and what they saw filled Albus with both joy and sorrow. A little baby boy wriggled, letting out a small cry and wrapped around him was a little girl, who held him tight, as if afraid to let him go. This came as a shock to Albus, who like everyone else had thought Lilly and James Potter had only a son. It was Severus who spoke first,
"She looks just like her mother."
"She has the same red hair and green eyes." Albus agreed.
"No, it's more than that," Severus said looking into the cot where they both lay. "She has that same look in her eyes."
Albus looked sadly at his friend and then looked at the two children. As he did he noticed that the boy, Harry, had a lightening cut on his forehead and the girl, who held onto him tightly, had an identical one on her right shoulder.
"What should we do with them Albus?” Severus asked, now concealing his emotions.
"They're not safe here." He agreed. Gently picking up the two babies, Albus carried them outside, being careful not to wake the sleeping boy. The girl on the other hand, refused to close her eyes and give into exhaustion.
Albus knew Lilly didn’t want anyone to know about her daughter so she could keep her safe. Now that she was gone, Albus had to keep her safe. He didn’t want to separate the twins, but if she stays with little Harry; the boy of the prophesy, it would only do her harm. “Severus, I need you to-“
“Let me take the girl, I want to keep Lilly’s little girl safe, I-“
“You and I both know you can’t do that. If you want to keep her safe you have to help me, Severus.” Albus looked at him in the eye. Severus looked lost and Albus didn’t know what to for his friend, but it wouldn’t benefit either of them if he had Lilly’s daughter. “Please, Severus, take her to a Muggle orphanage, she’ll be safe there.”
“And the boy?” Severus asked.
“He’ll be sent to his aunt and uncle’s place. There is a spell strong enough there to keep him safe, but not them both.” Albus handed the struggling little girl to Severus, who didn’t say a word. “Do you know if she has a name?”
“Lucia, I believe.”
“How do you know?” Albus looked a Severus confused.
“Lilly sent me an owl, before their birth, listing names. Lucia was her favourite.”
“I see.” Albus smiled. “Lilly’s little Lucia” He could’ve swear he saw Severus show a grin. “Severus you understand that no one can know that she exists.”
“I understand”
“I guess I’ll see you then” Severus nodded and started to walk away. The little girl in his arms was crying out to her brother, who was no longer around, for Albus had apparated.
“Hush now, you’ll be safe. I’ll watch over you.” He whispered. The little girl sobbed and Severus apparated.
