One day in Hokkaido, Japan, there was a little boy who was looking for a place to cry. It was already four in the afternoon went to the park and found the only cherry blossom tree there. Beneath it, he cried until a little girl tapped him on the back and startled him. The boy looked at her with an irritated look and asked why she was there. A very special place of mine was the little girl’s reply. She noticed the tears on his face and was curious so she asked him the cause of his sobbing. He was hesitant in answering her question but because of the girl’s radiant smile, he answered “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.” She smiled and told him to not cry because she is certain that he will figure that out soon enough. The boy thought about what she said and stopped crying. Because of the little girl’s jovial personality, she offered him to play and he happily accepted it.
They played for hours until the night was taking place but the sun’s light was still scattered. Before they separated paths, the little boy asked the little girl’s name but due to her mother’s order of not telling strangers her name, she gave him her nickname “Kei” instead which means cheerful. She told him that he doesn’t need to her his name because she already thought of a nickname for him. “Umi” she told him which made the boy bewildered on why she gave him such a strange name. She loves to read and read that ‘Umi’ means the ocean and since she first met him crying and suddenly thought of that name. He blushed and quickly said goodbye. When he was already outside the park, he yelled “Let’s play again tomorrow again, ok?” She smiled and yelled back “Ok!”
Since that day, they were always together like a butterfly and a flower playing in the park under the cherry blossom tree. They became best of friends and shared laughter, secrets and even bizarre moments together. One time, when they were playing, Kei collapsed. Umi panicked and ran towards her. When she opened her eyes, she told Umi not to worry for its not the first time this happened to her. There, he learned her secret. Kei was suffering from a heart disease which was hard to cure. He felt very sad because of her condition. He figured out what he wants to be in the future and told Kei that he will become a doctor to cure her. She was touched but told him to not be a doctor to only help her but to help others also and he agreed. They rested and told each other stories instead of playing to avoid Kei from collapsing again.
One week later, Umi met Kei smiling gleefully yet he greeted her with sad eyes. Kei got bewildered and asked him what was possibly bothering him. He told her that he will be studying abroad in America. She immediately got sad and told him to promise her to return beneath the cherry tree after ten years and there, she will be waiting. He accepted it and they made a pinky swear as the wind blew and the cherry blossoms danced above them.
Ten years has passed and Umi, whose real is Tamaki Suoh, returned to Japan just after he graduated in medical school. He became a doctor which made his parents proud. Above all, he did this for Kei. When he arrived in Hokkaido in the afternoon, he first went to Kei’s house to see her after ten years. A lady, whom she said to be the nanny there, greeted him and asked his purpose there. He told her that he was looking for Kei. She got bewildered and Tamaki realized that it was only a nickname that the two of them only used. So he told her that he was looking for a girl with a heart disease. The nanny suddenly became sorrowful. She told her that Kei and her family died two months ago from a car crash while they were out of town. Tamaki suddenly felt a shock of pain and asked her where she is buried. After she told him, he thanked her and left. He went to the cemetery where Kei was buried. He felt excruciating emotional pain when he saw her grave and tears began to fill his eyes. He suddenly remembered Kei’s words that he will not only help but others too. “I’ll keep my promise” he whispered.
Tamaki became a doctor who specializes in cardiology (cardiologist) at a local hospital there and helped the patients who needed his service. One week as a new doctor there, he was introduced to his new patient, Hana Fujioka. She was suffering from a heart disease and amnesia which means that she doesn’t remember anything about her past. She was adopted in the province but because of her complicated heart disease, the hospital there can’t take care of her so she was transferred in a more advanced hospital. He expected her to be quiet because of her condition but she was jovial more than any patient there. This surprised him and admired her for her optimism in life despite her condition. It didn’t take long for him to develop feelings for her.
Every day, Hana became weaker and her body became frailer. But as expected, she didn’t show her pain and smiled instead. She reminded Tamaki of his first love for their similar personality. Because of his special feelings for her, he studied her disease more than any of his patients because there are only few who survived with a similar disease.
It was morning when a distressed nurse called for help. The head nurse asked her what the problem is and she said that a patient is missing. Tamaki asked the nurse who the patient is and was shocked. It was Hana who allegedly disguised herself to hide from the nurses and doctors and escape the hospital.Tamaki quickly left the hospital and looked for Hana. He looked everywhere until he reached the park. He found her there staring the cherry blossom tree and a gush of wind blew and the cherry blossoms fell. He asked what she was doing there. “This is a special cherry blossom tree” she whispered and then she collapsed but Tamaki caught her.
Hana was in a coma for five weeks and everyday became worse. Each day, her heart became weaker so an operation was mandatory. Tamaki was afraid that he will fail but he reaized that he must try for his love. When she was operated, it was a crucial moment. Him, seeing her in
that condition with only fifty percent chance of surviving frightened him, but he knows he has to do his best and apply everything he knows to save his love. One nerve wracking hour has passed and the operation was success. Tamaki was the happiest because the success. The next day, he received a phone call from the nanny he met in Kei’s house. After she told him the news, he fell to his knees and he began to shed tears.
Hana opened her eyes for the first time, one week after the operation. The first thing she saw was Tamaki asleep on a chair beside her bed. When he woke up, he was utterly full of glee. The first thing she said to him was to take her to the cherry blossom tree in the park. Since Hana was still weak, she waited one week before she went to the park. Tamaki told her the story of him and Kei. How they met, how he fell in love with her and how he thought that she was dead. He told her that Kei survived and it was a different person who died in the accident and it was still being investigated. “I love you, Kei” he said. Tears began to well up Hana’s eyes and looked at Tamaki. “Umi…” she whispered. Even though she has amnesia, her memories came back but it’s still somewhat blurry for her yet she realized her feelings towards him. Underneath that cherry blossom tree, they shared their first kiss as the cherry blossoms fell slowly like dancing flowers on air and the sun slowly sets.
