Chapter 1

"Robert you cannot make me do this." I said urgently as the car bumped along the dirt road.

"Boss's orders, honey." Robert said, glancing back at me. "I'm sorry."

"This is literal hell." I whispered, looking out at the bleak scenery as we drove past.

"Agreed, Miss Montgomery." Robert nodded, an uneasy look on his face as well.

I let out a sigh, leaning back against the pristine leather seats.

"Can you just pretend you dropped me off there and in reality take me to our home in Los Angeles?" I asked hopefully.

"I quite like my job." Robert laughed, not turning around to glance at me.

My hand tightened on the door handle as the car went over a particularly nasty pothole in the poorly cared for roads.

"This is ridiculous." I muttered under my breath, looking down at my phone.

The 'no service' in the top left corner made my stomach churn.

How did anybody live like this?

"Oh my God farms. Oh my God oh my God." I gasped, sitting up slightly as we passed a pasture filled with cows. "I will not live on the same property as a farm animal."

"We're almost there, Miss Montgomery." Robert told me as he turned down another dirt road.

My stomach churned again at the insane unevenness of this road. I didn't think it could get worse, but it did.

"784 East Desert Road." Robert recited as he slowed down in front of a mail box with 784 on it, the four having fallen off and repainted sloppily.

An instant feeling of dread spread through my body at the sight of the small house next to a barn.

A real life chicken ran across the grassy driveway, disappearing into the barn.

"This is my own personal hell." I whispered as Robert pulled the car into the driveway.

I waited for Robert to come around and open the door for me, shedding an imaginary tear for my pristine white flats as I stepped onto the dusty ground.

"My bags." I told him as I pulled my sunglasses down from off of my head to place over my eyes.

I waited for Robert and then walked up to the front door with him slightly behind me. The front door was painted a dark green, the paint chipped in multiple places, revealing the plain wood underneath.

With a deep breath, I knocked on the door, ready to commit myself to my prison sentence for the summer.

Almost instantly, the door flew open and I was faced with my Aunt Rory. I hadn't seen her in five years and she definitely showed it. With bits of grey hair surrounding her face and more wrinkles than the last time I saw her, she greeted me with a broad smile.

"Jordyn! How was the flight?" Aunt Rory grinned, pulling me into a hug.

My eyes widened slightly.

She was wearing jeans and a grey t-shirt, her clothes covered in dirty and reeking of sweat.

What a drastic difference to my light jeans, rolled up to mid-calf, and my light green tank top.

I could not get dirt on these clothes, they cost almost as much as my phone.

"Uh, uneventful." I said with a smile, stepping back from her to end the hug.
