There was a small city in Nepal named Kirtipur that was surrounded by green hills. In this city was a legendary house. A house where a man lived. This man was only seen at night, when the moon was high. Never had anyone seen him when the sun shone. He never smiled and also always wore the same baggy clothes that seemed to have never been washed. One of the neighbors once exclaimed "I saw him last night, while I was working on my computer!" There were many rumors about him, such as the one which says he lost his memory in an ambush, forgetting his address and deciding to stay in the village.
One night, the man worked in his house as usual. Perry, the mayor's curious daughter, went to check on him. When she got there, there was only darkness. "I cannot see anything!" Perry exclaimed. "How does this man make regular donations to the village if he is too poor to even buy a bulb or candle? And why work at night without any light to speak of? God makes strange people, like he who is an owl. Also me, for I am far too curious. I do not even know why I came here!" After staying in the dark area for a while longer, Perry made a promise to herself to return the day after.
The next morning Perry left her house in order the visit the man's. Before she got too far from her house, her father called her from the window. She returned to her house, and the promise to visit the man's house slipped her mind until after her supper. She quickly left the house, trying not to get sidetracked again.
When Perry got to the man's house, she didn't see anyone. She was about to return home again when she suddenly heard the sound of the front door opening. She quickly sprinted to hide behind a bush near the house, her heart hammering with excitement. Perry peeked out of her hiding spot to see the man go to post box nearby to post a letter. He held a torch in order to do this, and because of this Perry could see the exact shape, colour, and size of the letter.
Early the next morning, Perry went to her father to ask if she could open post box No. 7 (This was where the man had posted his letter). She spun a sorry tale of having put the wrong address on her letter, and won her father over with the story and a few tears rolling down her cheeks.
Perry retrieved to letter and opened it. She was surprised to see some wildlife photographs and a paper with the man's data on it, complete with a photograph. Though confused, Perry made photocopies of everything in the envelope. She made some changes to the address on the envelope.
The next morning, Perry brought out as much courage as she could and knocked on the man's house. There was no answer. "Hello! Is anybody there?" Perry cried. She waited for a while longer before the door creaked open.
The man stood in the doorway. "What is it?" the man asked, not too unkindly. Perry straightened up before answering.
"Pardon me, sir! You seem to have a bad address on the letter you sent last night. I have come here to return it." she declared, smiling brightly at the man. The man nodded and reached for the envelope, uttering a small noise of thanks.
"If I might ask, why exactly did you send this letter so late at night?" Perry asked after the man had taken the envelope.
"Late at night? It was bright and early in the morning! How can you speak about doing things too late when you come here and disturb me at nine in the evening?" The man said suddenly, and incredulous look on his face. Perry was about to reply when she realized suddenly.
This was what people meant by losing his memory!
Perry quickly shut her mouth and bowed her head. As she did this, she caught sight of several enlarged photographs of different wildlife landscapes on the walls. On the walls was the address of Julie Brown.
But suddenly she noticed a sight of bold letters "Become an artist, to do so post about you and some wildlife photographs in a letter to Julie Brown" The man slammed the door as soon as Perry bowed.
When Perry got home, she searched up Julie Brown on her laptop. There were many results, but the top one stated that Julie Brown was a wildlife photographer looking for apprentices, and that she would be patient with anyone. Perry stared at the web page for a while longer, and then shut off her laptop and flopped onto her bed.
"Well." she said to herself. "That mystery was definitely not as interesting as I'd hoped it would be."
