"Wish I had just called out sick today, this blizzard is a fucking disaster. Of course I picked today of all days to actually go to work," I grumbled to myself washing the gaudy bright red Diner counter to for the fifth time in two hours just for something to do. I worked the nightshift to avoid too much human contact, I'm ass with people, but god it drags on.
"I shouldn't even be here. No one is stupid enough to be out in this thing," I muttered, squinting out the window only to see an endless flurry of snow. I could be home right now, probably texting my friend Roxy about how the universe likes to fuck me in the ass. Hell, I could be doing that now, but my phone died. Now I can't even finish the badass fanfic I was writing about those gay aliens. I have three hours before I dump the diner off onto a coworker and get the hell out of here.
I slumped away from the now shimmering counter, tossing the towel into the sink behind the pick-up counter. May as well make myself a coffee or something- no ones here to yell at me. It's 2AM and if I don't get some caffeine I'm going to pass out on the floor somewhere. Maybe that wouldn't be too bad, I did mop twice already out of boredom. At least it's clean.
I find myself sitting on the counter sipping my third coffee, glaring at the window. The snow hasn't gotten any lighter since it started. What a pain in the ass. I gulped down the last of my coffee and nearly choke when I heard that annoying little bell at the corner of the door chime. Who the shit would be out in this storm?
At the door stands a shivering boy in all his bucked tooth glory, dark hair sticking in every direction under a heap of snow. he quickly shoved the door closed behind him, and huffed in relief at the warmth of the dingy Diner. The dark haired boy had nerdy black rimmed glasses and this ugly green scarf, but I guess it suited him. His lips were a cringeworthy shade of purple from the cold, his hair quickly turning damp as the snow melts. He stood there for a few moments brushing snow off himself before showing any sign of actually noticing me. "O-oh! Uh, hi! Are you open still? My car broke down a little ways from here and-" he stuttered nervously.
"Nah, man. You're fine. You look like shit, sit down or something. Just looking at you is making me cold. Let me get you something warm to drink." I say, gesturing lazily to the stools at the counter while I slid off my own to grab him something.
"Thanks mate! That'd be fantastic!" He said flashing me the dorkiest smile I've ever seen. He's almost kind of cute though. For a nerd. I give a slight nod and watch him over my shoulder while I pour him some hot chocolate. He sat rubbing his hands together for warmth, shivering a little still. Yep. He was cute.
I slide him the cocoa across the counter and sit on the opposite side of him, slouching over the counter. He happily took the chipped mug and brought it up to his nose, and graced me with another bright grin."So," I start "What were you doing out here driving so late during a goddamn blizzard?" I ask with no real heat. He scratches his head, looking a little bashful.
"Ah! Well, a cousin of mine lives around here with his boyfriend, so I was paying them a visit! Cute couple they are, his boyfriend reminds me a bit of you, actually! Looks like I should have planned a better day though, huh?" He said before taking a sip of his cocoa.
"Yeah, I'll say. I'd have left this dump hours ago if I could get my car out of the damn lot. Guess it's a good thing though, you could have died out there" The cold must be getting to me because I get bold, saying "Wouldn't want to rob the world of a cutie like you."
A blush spreads over his already red cheeks, "Oh, haha! I guess! Hah!" He stuttered obviously taken back by his comment. I chuckled, trying to hide my own reddening face"I'm just fooling with you, idiot."
He smiled and hid his face in his mug. "So, what's a cool lad like you doing workin' in a place like this?"
"I ask myself he same thing every night. I work night's at this shit show because hardly anyone shows up aside from the occasional tourist or trucker passing through town," I step around the counter and start arranging the chairs to their places, I hadn't gotten to it after mopping, "Don't know why the owners insist on keeping it open all hours of the damn night, but I'm one of the only lunatics willing to work graveyard shift" I explained.
Jake nods. "Then why stay?" he asks. I stop what I'm doing and think about it for a moment.
"I respect their integrity. Or some shit. I don't know."
"That's the spirit! This place isn't such a dump. It's a bit charming, you know? It suits you." he says, glancing at me over the rim of his mug before tilting it back finishing the last of his cocoa.
We continued chatting about bullshit. Joking around and laughing about anything and everything. He was a little less bashful every time I made a flirty comment, even tried to make a few of his own.
By dawn the snow cleared up and plow had come and cleaned out the roads and parking lot. I walked him to his rusty pickup covered in snow and helped him get it started back up.he climbed into the tuck and got comfortable in the beat up leather seats, looking right at home. I shoved my hands into my pockets, trying to hide the fact that I was disappointed that he was leaving. He turned back to me, flashing me the toothy grin I had learned to know in these last few hours.
"Thank you for all your help, mate, I had a lot of fun-" a pause, "Silly me! I don't recall getting your name!" He exclaims.
"Dirk. Dirk Strider. And you?" I replied.
"Jake English. Pleasure to meet you, Dirk." He said and shifted weirdly in his seat before continuing. "Er- I hope this isn't too forward, but could I..maybe, get your number or something?"
I can't contain my smile. "Sure thing, nerd" I said. He looks giddy and hands me his phone. The screen is so cracked I can barely make out the keyboard.
Once I pass it back he says "Thanks! So, I'll talk to you later, I hope?" He asks, no longer hiding his excitement.
"Sure thing," I said.
When I finally get home early that morning I throw myself on to my unmade bed and melt into the well-worn sheets. I'm exhausted. I don't know why I do this to myself, taking a shift that late. While my mind drifts off, I can't help but think about Jake. What would I tell Roxy. She'd probably give me hell for being so damn smitten. Fuck, I'm so gay.
I was falling a sleep before my phone beeped.
I groggily picked up my phone to find a message from an unknown number.>> Hello :B - Jake
