I remember when I was younger, Hope would always tell me to say inside the house, and not to go outside. I never understood why. I would watch all the children play or learn or even cry, but I always envied them. I was only six.

One day, while my sister was working, I got the courage to go outside for my first time ever.  There was a group of boys playing. All of them lived in the house around us, except one. He was the first to notice me.

"Hey! New Girl. Where did you come from? What is your name?" He sounded curious and excited. I didn't know what to do since the only person I ever knew was Hope.

"I'm Sin. I live there." I imitated what I had seen the other children do when they met for the first time and pointed to my house. We lived in the poor part of the village, so it was small and only had two rooms; the living area for cooking, eating, playing and such, and the bedroom.

"I am Aron. I live on the other side of the village." That explained why I didn't know where he lived. Hope told me that only rich people lived on that side of the village. "Can you play?"  He held out the ball that they were playing with. All the other boys looked at me. I had watched them enough to know that boys and girls weren't allowed to play together. But, I had really wanted to play "pass the ball". I knew the rules; you had to pass to ball to some one in the group without using your hands or letting it touch the ground. I also knew most of the moves that they used a lot.

"Yes, I do." I was going to ignore all of the rules and play with boys, when I should be inside learning something from a nonexistent mother.

"Come on then. Hurry and get the ball."  He had tossed the ball in the air.  I kicked it, in the air, to the person directly across from me. It hit him with such force it knocked him over and onto the ground. I had gained the other boys' respect after that.

We played for hours. I apparently was a natural at the game.  I was having so much fun that I didn't even notice Hope getting home,

"Sin! What are you doing!" I suddenly felt really bad about going outside. I didn't know why she didn't want me to go but it was for my sake, that much I was sure.

Hope smiled, "I guess I can't keep you away now that you know what it is like." And just like that she let me continue playing with the boys outside.

They would ask me questions, about why they had never seen me before, the mark on my chest, and stuff like that. I really didn't mind. Sometimes Aron's brother would come, but he never did any thing.

One day a lady came not too long after Hope got home. She looked at me, a filthy girl playing with a bunch of boys and gasped.

"Mother? What are you doing here?"  The lady must have been Aron's mother. She walked up to me. She didn't give any warning at all and pulled down my collar to see my chest.

She screamed.

"She is the creation of Devils' work!" She was pointing at me. “That is the Devil's mark!” People were coming out of their houses and, when then figured out what was going on, they grabbed their children and ran inside.

Hope ran outside to but she just grabbed me.  The woman's eyes widened and pointed at her.

"You! You did this! You did the taboo! You made a monster while trying to bring back your sister!" That was all I really remember in detail. After that there was a huge break out of fighting. It ended with Hope saying we would leave the next evening.

When we were back inside, she explained everything.

"When I was 10, mother had a baby. Right after, both Mother and the baby girl died. I don't know why but they did. I was horrified. Father had just died and brother had gone missing; in fact, he is still missing. I also lost most of the family fortune. I decided that I would try to bring Faith, the baby back to life. When I did, I had to do a ritual. I gave the body away though a gate. When I got it back there were two; one live and ugly, the other dead and normal. So I dropped the living one through the gate. When it started to close, I felt guilty and snatched you back. I named you Sin since you were my sin. The mark on your chest is the devil's mark. No one can ever see it. Only show it to the people you trust most in the world."

The next evening we had all our things packed and on a coach. I was clean and wearing a new and fancy dress, with a sash made from mothers wedding dress to cover the mark. We also agreed to change my name to Maryanna.

We left our old village of Caron and have not returned once, not even for a moment, since.
