Since I took such a long nap the night before, I couldn't fall asleep until 3 in the morning and then I had to get up at 6:30 to go to practice. Well, I didn't get up at 6:30 because, ya know, 3 hours of sleep gets to ya, so I didn't get to practice until 7:15, which is 15 minutes late. I drove as fast as I could and was practically jumped out of my Range Rover to get inside the complex. I heard someone behind me and my heart literally skipped a beat when I saw Eleny behind me.
"Hi Eleny, how are you?" I asked breathily as I was trying to comprehend what I had just seen. Eleny was dead, well, I guess not since she's standing right in front of me.
"Hi Harry, um I'm fine, but are you okay? You seem a little bit stressed out...," Eleny replied with a worrisome look on her face. Her wavy, short blonde hair fell over her face in layers and I noticed that she had bright, gray eyes. She was absolutely beautiful, I can't believe that it took her, "dying," for me to figure it out.
"Oh yeah, I'm good. Just trying to get to practice on time you know." I reply and smile at her weakly, hoping that she would forget my weird moment.
"Fam, there's no hope...we're 15 minutes late. We're dead." Eleny replied as she walked into the girls locker room. "I'll see you in there Harry."
We met as we both exited our respective locker rooms and walked outside together. Coach Scott was standing there and he smiled as he saw us. Yep, he smiled, which means we're pretty much goners.
"Ah, Harry, Eleny, nice of you guys to join us this morning!" Scott said as he smiled and walked over to us. "That means that there's gonna be a whole lotta dry land for you guys today!"
Eleny looked at me and looked like she was going to cry. I decided that I needed to be a man and advocate for our the well being of our physical health.
"Well, ya see Scott, if we do dry-land, well, that has like a lot of push ups and other activities that swimmers shouldn't be doing, because you know, we swim....We're going to be to weak to do actual swimming!" I told Scott as I smiled and laughed. Scott laughed too, but then just told us that we had to do a whole bunch of butterfly instead.
It would be an understatement to say that practice was horrible and that it sucked. It was the worst practice I've ever been to. I mean, I love Scott. He's been my coach since I was 5 and he is really nice, but I don't think that my body will ever recover. The butterfly punishment killed me and then we hard a really hard practice to top that. In addition, a couple of the freshman who thought they were cool, badmouthed one of the assistant coaches and he got mad and made the rest of us do push-ups anyway.
One thing that did come out of practice was that I learned about Eleny. I didn't talk to her because she was in a different lane, but I learned about her by seeing who she swam with. She would try to talk to people, but they already had a friend that they were really close with in their lane, so they wouldn't really talk back to her that much. Wow, was I that type of person? I talked to Eleny occasionally, mostly to say hi, but I never really got into a conversation with her. I guess that I just ignored her like all of the others.
People say that second chances are hard to come by, but that if you get one, you should take advantage of it. Looks like I was going to have a second chance with Eleny.
