I just have to call Stephan it ran through my head. With each two strides the word passed through my stressed mind "o-ver, o-ver, o-ver". I cán't go on like this! Not anymore. There was a time that I'd put everyting into this relationship, but since a week ago it's as clear as daylight that there will be no way that our eight year relationship will last one day longer - come hell or high water this hás to end today!
I jog the few stairs up to my apartment. Once I'm inside I take my phone out of the back pocket of my jeans and plop down on the couch. I've been preparing myself mentally for this confrontation the past week I think as I scroll down my contact list searching for Stephan's number. After only two rings he answers.
"Hey honey, how are you?"
I can't take this! He is alway so correct. Even the way he speaks.
"Hey, listen Stephan... we have to talk. Before this day is over. What time will you be home?" I respond.
"What is wrong? I will probably be there in about half an hour. Did something went wrong today?" he asks concerned.
I sigh "No, something went wrong for the last couple of years. See you later. Bye." And with that I switch my phone of. Half an hour is enough to get my shit together, to think about a reasonable way to explain to Stephan why I don't love him anymore...if I ever really did. To explain to him that he has to move into another apartment. to explain that I don't even want him as a friend anymore.Exactly half an hour later I hear the key turn in the lock. Finally.
"Huney I am home!"
I just look at him blankly an start walking to the kitchen. I sit down on one of the bar stools standing at the island. I gesture to him to sit down opposite me.
"Stephan... this isn't working for me and I'm sure you aren't very happy in this relationship either..." he tries to speak but I quickly wave with my hand to quiet him.
"I'm selling the appartment. I'm already moving in with somebody else."
"We've come so far Zoe, you can not give up now! Where do I have to live if you sell this place? And, are you cheating on me Zoe?" he asks.
"No, we haven't came any further than where we were in sixth grade. You rent a room at Joe's. You don't have a say in this place. It was mine and you lived here rent-free without any binding contract. And lastly - I'm not cheating on you! I've only emailed the person I'm moving in with. I don't even know if it's a guy or a girl."
He sighs "Will you atleast give me your new addres so I can vissit you sometime?"
He is such a week guy, excepting my desicions just like that. "No you can't. Now if you don't mind, I've got an assignment to finish." With that I stand up and was about to go to my room when U remembered one piece of information. "O yeah Stephan?"
"What?!" I was taken aback by his sudden anger.
"You - we both - have to be out by Friday. The new owner is moving in over the weekend." And with that I walk of to my room.Once I shut the door behind me I lean against it. I was rude to him, and I don't want to listen ti his arguing or to him telling me what he thinks is best for us. I'm done with all that.
I open my laptop to go on with my assignment but first decide to email my new flattmate. Usually I wouldn't dream of moving in with a complete stranger, but as all are now - I'm willing to do almost anything to get away from my past live that was on a slow boat to nowhere.
I just want to check if it's still okay with the person if I pay my first rent on Friday and move in on Saturday. All was fine and I went on with my assignment. I Could barely wait to make a certain change in my life!
After a while I heard Stephan walking from the kitchen, down the hallway, taking a second to stop by my door, then passing it and slamming shut the door of his - soon to be old - room.
