I was crouched down on the sand placing the pieces of wood that everyone had found into the fire pit. I was almost done with the sticks. Now we just had to set it on fire. I didn't know how we were going to do that because none of us had a lighter.
It was just Alec, Brett, and I working on the fire. Everyone else was either looking for wood or finding things to cook over the fire. I stood up and walked over to our small stack of sticks and picked up a few. When I turned back around the sticks I had originally placed were on fire. I stared at it in confusion and awe.
"How..." I said slowly as I stared at the blazing flames.
Alec was standing next to the fire. He puffed out his chest and said, "I am an honorary boy scout."
He looked so proud but I was still a bit confused as to how he lit it so fast so I asked, "How did you do that?"
"Magic," he said in a sarcastic voice and held up two rocks. He attempted to hit the rocks against each other and make a spark but messed up when he lost his grip on one of the rocks and it flew into his face with a loud thud. He let out a groan and stared at the rock angrily. "YOU WANT A PEICE OF ME," he yelled at the rock. He picked it up and threw it as hard as he could into the lake.
"Wow you really showed that rock whose boss," I teased with a laugh.
He rolled his eyes and kicked a stick into the fire.
"Don't be so dramatic," Brett said as he stared at the lake with a blank look.
Alec stuck out his tongue at Brett's back and started to walk to the house mumbling something I couldn't understand. I shook my head and walked over to Brett. I forced my face in his line of sight which caused him to give me a small smile. He motioned his hand for me to talk.
I smiled and sat down on the sand next to his bare feet. He sat down too but continued to look at the lake. "The answer is yes," he said as he looked at me with a sly smile but his voice was serious.
"I didn't even ask you anything," I said as I nudged him with my elbow.
"You were going to ask if I found Lillian attractive."
"You leave nothing to imagination," I said with a smile. He didn't reply so I asked, "How did you know I was going to ask that?"
"I can read minds."
His tone was serious so I couldn't tell if he was joking.
"I'm joking," he said as he nudged me with his shoulder.
"I knew that," I said in a pouting voice.
"No you didn't. I can read minds so I know you're lying."
"I thought you were joking!"
He shook his head and said, "You're an odd one." After a moment of silence between us he asked, "Did you actually believe me?"
"I've learned that anything is possible," I said as I looked up at him and smiled. It was a sad smile but it was still a smile. I quietly mumbled the word anything and looked back towards the lake.
"Well don't worry I wasn't reading your mind," he said with a small laugh.
"That's good. I don't think you would like it in there."
He put his head in my line of vision like I had done to him and simply asked, "Why?"
I thought for a moment and said, "I lost something I cared about which makes it unbearable at times. I guess there is just a hole where something was and I don't know how to fill it. It sucks when you lose things you love..."
He stood up and said, "When things are lost they get found, so all you have to do is find it."
I looked up at him and his gentle smile made me feel warm inside. His kind words made the difference I was hoping for in this trip. I didn't want to complain about my overwhelming amount of emotion but I think that his words made the greatest impact on me. I need to acknowledge the feelings I have instead of just forgetting them. Even if they are bad I need to just learn how to live with them or find something that makes the pain lessened. He held out his hand and I accepted it. He pulled me up and I said, "Thank you, but I think someone already found them for me."
He stared at me with a blank expression but slowly smiled and turned towards the fire.
"You're making this difficult," he said as he put his hand's in his pockets.
I turned my head and asked, "Making what difficult?"
"What," he asked with an expression that was just as confused as I was.
"You just said that I was making something difficult."
He was about to open his mouth to say something but before he could Alec came out of nowhere and threw a bag of marshmallows at me. It didn't hurt but it surprised me.
"What," I said in an annoyed tone.
"Wow I thought you were intelligent like me. Those are clearly marshmallows."
I glared at him and turned to Brett but he was already gone and next to the fire. I hadn't realized it but everyone was already sitting on blankets around the fire.
I was about to yell at Alec but something tugged on my shirt and I looked down to see Markus sitting on a red blanket. "I saved you a seat next to me."
"Have fun with your boy toy," Alec whispered as he ran away to the other side of the fire where Brett was sitting. Alec tripped over nothing and fell face first onto Autumn's lap. He let out a small whimper as he backed away from Autumn who looked like she was going to kill him. But Jacob's expression was even scarier. Alec mumbled something that I couldn't understand and Jacob's expression went from angry to less angry while Autumn still continued to glare. He crawled over to Brett and sat next to him with a smile on his face.
I looked at Autumn and Jacob suspiciously as I sat down next to Markus. I leaned over to Jacob who was sitting next to me on a different blanket but he held up his hand and said, "Don't be so nosy."
I pouted and scooted back over to Markus. The rest of the night everyone talked and laughed. We found out more about Brett and Alec. I now know that they are best friends and that Alec is 19 and Brett is 20. Tomorrow we decided to go to this waterfall thing that Markus found when he was younger. It's about a mile away from the house and flows directly to the lake in front of the house. It sounded really pretty the way he described it so I couldn't wait to see it. Markus pulled me to the side and told me that he didn't trust Alec or Brett so I told him to calm down. I didn't want to discuss it anymore so I went to bed early. Lillian and Autumn were sharing one of the rooms while Jacob and Markus shared a different one. Brett and Alec shared the last room so I slept on the couch. I listened to my music as I dozed off into a peaceful sleep.
