"We're almost there," the Cat demon, Luke, in front of me said.

"Where are we going?" I said, almost whining. I didn't want to be awake yet.

"I can't tell you now, but you need to see this," Luke continued to walk forward through the brush.

I sighed, I had known Luke for over eight years and he still got on my nerves. I'm turning eighteen next week, while Luke still looks like he is nineteen. I met Luke after I had run away and was hiding in an abandoned house....

I could smell the dust and dirt that surrounded me in the alcove under the stairs where I was hiding. I was just eating a loaf of bread , stolen from a store, when I noticed a hungry looking orange tabby cat slink out of a crack in the stairs. Looking at him I took pity on him, giving him a few small pieces of bread. I stayed up a while, petting the cat gently on the head. Near sunrise I fell asleep with him on my lap. I slept quite peacefully for the most part only shifting slightly.

When I woke up, it was almost midnight, I heard the sound of water running near by. I got up and looked around cautiously. I was afraid the people I was hiding from had found me. I soon came to the doorway for the kitchen, I could see a refrigerator from my hiding spot. I peaked around the corner, and saw a boy, at least that's what I thought he was, washing dishes in a sink. I noticed almost immediately that he wasn't a human, he had unnaturally bright orange hair, and a tail!

Without turning around to face me he spoke calmly, "Good evening, thank you for the bread last night."

"Who are you?" I was a little freaked out and was trying to keep my voice from cracking.

Turning around while still drying a plate, "I'm sorry, where are my manners. I am Luke, and this is my home. Or rather what is left of it." He placed the plate on the counter, smiling self-consciously.

Warily I side stepped farther into the kitchen, "Okay lets rephrase my question, WHAT are you?" I asked him sarcastically, while pointing to his now prominent cat like ears and tail.

Smiling almost like he was amused at my lack of knowledge, he replied, "I am a cat demon."

"Well I'm just a human, sorry... My name is Nire, and I'm sorry for barging in last night, but I needed to get away from someone last night."

"Who?" he asked looking at me with curiosity.

I sighed looking down at my feet before replying, "Someone who wants me dead. I'm on my own and running." I couldn't bring myself to look into his piercing green eyes.

He looked at me thoughtfully, before stepping towards the fridge. "What?" I asked suspiciously following his every movement with my eyes.

"Just thinking... Why would anyone be trying to kill you?" He asked turning to look at me, pulling a carton of milk from the fridge, "And why did you sleep all day?"

I crossed my arms feeling defensive, "I can move more freely during the night." I grabbed my bag and began pawing through it, only stopping when I pulled a worn box out.

"What is that?" He pointed to the box with an eyebrow raised.

I opened it and pulled out a bundle of leather, before responding. "Its my outfit."

He looked slightly let down, but asked, "Why is it made of leather?"

"I'm not sure," looking down at the article of clothing I ran my hand over it lovingly. "All I know is someone made it for me years ago and it still fits like a glove. Plus its easier to move in than a pair of sweats."

"Oh... I see..." I knew his mind was on food so I made it my mission that when I could sneak away I would definitely be finding some fish to bring back. He turned to face the sink again, pouring a glass of milk before returning the milk to the fridge.

I shifted slightly, uneasy about my next question. "Is there... umm... Any way I could change in private?" I looked down with a slight blush on my face.

"Of course!" He led me to a room that at first I was left in shock of the glorious furnishings and the impeccable state.

"It's beautiful!" I turned on the stop trying to take it all in.

"Yell if you need anything," he pulled the door closed as he left the room, leaving me to explore and change in private.

I changed quickly before silently slipping down the hallway to the room I woke up in. Now that I was awake it appeared as if it were the sitting room, I placed my bag on the chair and dug through it before pulling a lightweight black hooded cloak out.

All of a sudden I heard someone move behind me, causing me to whirl around. "Where do you think you're going, girly?" A man, or what looked like a man, questioned from his hiding spot in the shadows. I couldn't make out any features, I just knew my gut instinct watching him was to run.
