Ch 8
My prep team stands before me smiling. They are extremely pleased with themselves. Apparently I look beautiful. I don’t feel beautiful. I feel empty, tired, and… oh I don’t know… probably a bit of longing mixed in. I’m dressed in a floor length black dress with gold embroidery, gold flat sandals that wrapped up my legs and tied right below my knees. My hair was pulled up in an elaborate crown braid and my face was covered in a very light layer of makeup. “You’re ready.” One of them whispered. I nodded my thanks and walked out. It was early but I walked down to the stage are anyways. I waited under the stage for an hour muttering under my breath, pacing, and just sitting. By the time the other tributes showed up I was exhausted. We were all led up onto the stage. I sat to the right of Ben meaning I would have my interview before him. The lights and crowds scare me. I’ve never been very good with people. Cesar Flickerman, who’s led the interviews ever since I can remember steps onto the stage. The crowd goes wild. This year his color is green. Not forest green, but bright, neon green that hurts your eyes if you look at it too long. The interviews each last three minutes and I try to pay attention but only a few stick in my mind. There’s a girl from District 1 that has hair so blond its almost white, and black eyes that promise death. There’s a boy from District 4 that has black hair and the lightest blue eyes I’ve ever seen. And a boy from District 9 who’s huge and ripped but seems to have nothing but air between his ears. I tune out after that until I hear my name. “Endymion Hadley!”
