Leah sat on her bed, her blanket curled up tightly in one small fist, the other clutching the cordless phone so tightly her knuckles were white. Tears stained her smooth, porcelain like face and her bright blue eyes glittered in the dimly lighted room. Her shoulders shook as she released another sob then bit her lip, trying too hard not to make a sound.

On the other end of the line was her best friend, Thames. He, too, was crying, although he wasn't trying to hide it. Leah could hear is shaky, labored breathing and the thought of him in such pain made her heart break more, if that were even possible.

His smiling image flashed in her head in their dead silence after Thames's startling confession. His bright, emerald green eyes and his shaggy dirty-blond hair that was always falling into his face when he laughed. She gave a silent heave, remembering all the laughter they had shared that day.

How can so much change in just a few split-seconds? She had so much she had never even told him.

I've had so many words.

But I've had no courage.

Now we're saying goodbye.

Don't want to miss you tonight.

"Leah..." His voice was soft over the phone. Soft and pleading. "Please say something."

"What do you expect me to say to that?" Leah said, a bit harsh. But what did he expect from her? He had spent the entire day acting as if all were fine and then called her half an hour ago to tell her he was about to kill himself.

"Anything.." he breathed out. She knew even though she couldn't see him that his eyes were desperately asking her to make it all better.

Tell me it's not over now.

I can change your mind somehow.

She breathed out slowly, trying to calm herself. There were things she'd been meaning to tell him, the time just never seemed right. But what better timing could there be than this? She may never have a chance to say these words to him again.

"Okay..." She readied herself for the next three words that were about to come out of her mouth. "Thames, I-"

Something slammed on the other end and Leah could hear a woman shouting. She couldn't understand what was being said, but she was catching a few words here and there.

"Good for nothing.... No son of mine... Little bitch... drunk.. OUT!"

His mother was drunk and angry. Again. Leah heard quick breathing and what she aeeumed was a slamming door.

"Thames?" she whispered, wiping her tear stained cheeks.

"I'm coming over," was all she heard before the phone went dead.

Leah looked at the phone for a long minute then jumped out of bed and rushed to her mirror. She pulled back her shimmering black hair and wiped her face better, reapplying her eyeliner and mascara. She sat back on her stool and stared into her own eyes. Her mind raced with thoughts of Thames. What he meant to her. Who she'd become because of him.
