"Hey dude, what's up?"
John stared at Dave blankly. "W-what are you d-doing here? Don't you have stuff to do? It's only two days before Christmas and... Dave smirked, and he laughed internally at his friend's cluelessness. "Nah, my bro doesn't care. Rose is at Jade's, so I thought I'd come over here. I mean, if your dad's okay with it and stuff." John shook his head. "I... uh, y-yeah, definitely, c-come in", he stuttered, opening the door wider for Dave. "Thanks, bro." Dave walked through the door, and John shut it behind him. Dave pulled his hood down off of his head, and flopped onto his friend's couch. John sat down next to him, and the two sat there for a few minutes, the barrier of silence making the moment more and more awkward. "So, um... do you... do you m-maybe want to watch a movie?" John asked. The coolkid sitting next to him groaned. John was notorious for having an awful taste in movies. But John just giggled and said, "don't worry, I'll let you pick it." Dave stood up. "Yes, but the question is whether you actually own good movies or not." John began to protest that all of his movies were great movies and that Dave didn't understand him.
After browsing through John's super lame collection of movies, Dave settled for Fight Club. "This looks slightly less lame," he told his friend, who glared at him and took the DVD. He inserted it into the DVD player, and took his place on the couch. "This movie's actually rated R, Dave." John sounded kind of nervous when he said this. Chuckling, Dave replied, "wow, Egbert, scared of a little violence? We're not six, dude. Or at least, I'm not." John crossed his arms. "I was just warning you. I didn't want you to get scared or anything." Dave rolled his eyes under his shades, and watched as the film slowly faded onto the screen. "Are you gonna take those off?" John asked, gesturing to his friend's sunglasses, but Dave shook his head, and John just shrugged. "Suit yourself, I guess.
The movie was really long, but not nearly as bad as Dave thought it would be, and John seemed to really enjoy it, so he didn't say anything. Dave had to resist the urge to put his arm around John, who had curled up on the couch with a blanket, eyes glued to the screen.
John's dad walked out of the hallway, wearing a crisp suit and carrying two suitcases. He glanced over at the guest. Dave nodded at him, and John paused Fight Club. His dad walked up to his friend, and shook his hand. He then hugged John goodbye, saying that Jade and Jake would pick him up in the morning, and then walked out the door without another word. Sighing, John unpaused the movie, and continued watching it.
Dave couldn't help but notice that his friend felt sort of sad. He wanted to console him, but... wouldn't that affect his cool-ness? Dave shook his head a little, and joined John in watching the rest of the movie.
As the end credits rolled up the screen, John's eyes were pricked with tears. Dave didn't really know why - the ending of the movie wasn't exactly sad. But it was a good movie - something he'd never admit to John - and he was glad he had watched it. John rose up from the couch. "Um, shouldn't you go home? I mean, I don't want your brother worried or anything... Dave cut his friend off. "No, man, my Bro won't mind me being gone." John brightened a little. "Oh! Cool! So, do you want to stay over or something?" His friend nodded. "Sure, dude." John smiled, and Dave's heart skipped. "Ha, okay, so, what now?" John inquired. Dave made his way back to John's collection of movies - he thoroughly enjoyed the last one, so how bad could the rest of them be?
He pulled out another movie - The Breakfast Club. John laughed a little. "Wow, Dave, do you have some weird 'club' obsession or something?" Dave scoffed. "No, John, I am picking all of these lame-" Dave checked the back of the movie to see when it came out - "super-old movies ironically. Get it right." He handed the movie to his friend, who disappeared into the living room again.
Dave followed him, back to the TV, and lay down on the couch, which earned much disapproval from his best bro. "Dave, sit up."
"Nope."
John rolled his eyes, and lifted up Dave's legs, and sat down on the couch. He pushed Dave's legs away from where he was sitting, but Dave's legs returned to their previous spot. John laughed, and Dave smiled at him, and the two sat there, waiting for the movie to begin.
