“Maryann, will you come help me in the kitchen? Allen should be getting home soon." It has been 10 years since we left. Hope and I move to the city, Bandar Raya. Not too long after, she met Allen and got married.

Now, I am they rich girl who has to live with her sister and brother in law because no one wants to marry her. Which is true. Girls are supposed to become berothed when they are 12 and get married when the are 15. Father died when she was 10 ish so she had to find some one on her own. and as for me, Allen is looking aroud like crazy trying to find someone. It makes it even harder that he has to be completely trustworthy and won't freak out over the devil's mark.

"Maryann!" Hope was making  a huge welcome back dinner for Allen. He had been gone for a few months as a soldier and was going to get back tonight. He was also bring another soldier home.

I went and helped Hope cook and clean. I set the table for four people. just as Hope placed the last dish of food on the table, we heard  the front door open.

“I’m home!”I could hear Allen and the friend take off their shoes and overcoats. I went to the door to take the coats.   Allen had real shiny black hair, a perfect tan, not too light not too dark, and a face that made my sister, and every other girl for that matter, fall in love with him at first sight. That is another reason why they all the hate me.  I am too close to their dream guy, even though he is already married.

I didn’t even want to look at the friend. But I had to. He must have been a year or two older than me which would make him 17 or 18. He had golden hair that was a bit longer than normal, but than again, so did Allen. His eyes were a startling shade of blue and  if any of the girls around here saw him, they would forget about Allen and go after him.

I took the coats and looked up to see Allen stare at me. I remebered that my hair was still down and that the only people that were supposed to see a girl with her hair down at my age is her huband.

“Sorry, I will go fix my hair.” I turned before he could say anything.

As I turned to go up the stairs to my room, I heard Allen. “I was just go to say her hair looked pretty like that.” I just kept going. I am a monster and monsters aren’t pretty.

I forced my hair in to a very messy bun, which was the best I could do, and went down to make sure that every thing was alright for dinner. Everyone was already sitting down and were waiting for me. I sat down.

“Maryann, this is Aaronon. He is what the army calles a bachelor soldier. He joined the army to keep from geting married.” Allen did this a lot. He seemed to be trying to play match maker, thinking that he could “help” one of his friends while he “helps” me.  I didn’t even ecknowlegde that they were there; I just nodded when I was talked to.

“Sorry, Aaronon. She has  something against men in general. It’s not just you. She is even like this to the girls in the neighborhood.” That was true but even more so for him because he looked similar to Aron, who ruined my life.  Hope, of course, made the perfect housewife and host. I had a hard time using manners at all, but I was ok at playing rich girl. All I had to do was be stuck up.

“Don’t think that girls should have to get married to inherit land, money or other property.” My perfect stuck up rich girl impression.

“I couldn’t agree more. Women should take care of themselves and not depend on husbands.” Everyone stared at Aaronon. I had never had someone tell me that. They all said that ‘women had their place in society and that is where they belonged.’ I hated people like that.

“Really? Why do you think that?” I was testing him to see if he was telling the truth.

“Women are spoiled, and unless they do all of the housework and take care of the childern, they have never worked a day in their lives. I think that women should learn how to work so the huband doesn’t have to do everything for his lazy wife.” I couldn’t do anything. He hated people like me. I didn’t care that he hated me, but he had insulted me and no one insults me.

“There are only two exceptions that I don’t think are lazy and spoiled that don’t do all those things, and they both hate me.” I had heard enough. Before he could say something that would make me strangle him, I walked out of the room, glaring at everything along the way.
