I can barely make out the woods. The wind howls seeming to say "hurry hurry" as my mother and I flee from the castle. It is the middle of the night, the darkest hour. The branches of the nearby trees tear at my once beautiful dress as I sprint past them. I turn back to look one last time, and I see the castle. my home, rising in the distance. Several hours before my father, King Gabriel was betrayed by his royal advisor MaIaki, and murdered in his sleep. We had never imagined he thirsted for my father's power, and what lengths he would go to obtain it.

He was going to come after Mother and I, but my faithful nursemaid, Annie warned us just in time and told us that the King was dead. My mother and I ran out the castle before Malaki and his follower came to do the same to us. Before tonight the castle symbolized strength and safety , now it is a place of death and betrayal.

Lost in my thoughts I didn't watch as I was running, I tripped over what I think is a tree stump. A sharp pain courses up through my leg, I fear it may be sprained. My mother who was leading the way, stops and runs over to me. "Can you walk?" she says with worry written on her face. She looks around to make sure we are not being followed. I nod my head and gingerly try to stand up. My legs shake and my vision blurred, but I do not fall back down. Mother takes my hand and we run as fast as my legs allow. I used to think these woods were beautiful, but in the dark, running for my life, they are terrifying as can be.

I hear a snap of a branch, we both turn around. It is one of Malakai's men on horseback, following our trail , He seems to be alone but others might be close by. We hide behind an old oak tree, both trying to slow our beating hearts. If he sees us, our escape will be all for nothing, our legacy will die with us. Mother quietly slips her ring off her finger, while trying to keep an eye on the man, She take my hand, and places her wedding ring into my hand. I look at her in astonishment. Why did she give me this, isn't she coming with me?
As if answering my question, She kisses my cheek and puts her hand on the hilt of her sword, She mouths one word,"run". Without waiting for me to respond, she pulls out her sword charges at the soldier. " Mother!" I scream, tears are steam down my face. I can't leave her. She gives one more glance and urgently yells "go Mia, run!" I see tears in her eyes too.

In that moment, time seems to slow down. The soldier comes behind her, and bore I can do anything, he stabs her through the back. I see the light dim from her eyes. He pulls out the sword and she crumples to the ground like a rag doll. "No!" I yell, my heart feels like it is breaking in two. The soldier starts advancing on me, I know I can't stay here no matter how much it kills me to leave. I start running, my tears blurring my vision, and my ankle throbbing but I know if I stop they will find me the same way they killed my mother
