It was, in all honesty, the class he was least excited for. Who needs Theatre? How would this subject ever help him become a world class engineer?
Adish had finally started his fourth year at Arouca West Secondary School and was looking forward to graduating soon and starting his university life as a young engineer in training. Arouca West however, wasn't exactly a school full of hope.
"Adish? Have a seat sir." Without even looking toward the door, the man at the front of the class addressed him. "Alright all, my name is Darryl Smith, you will refer to me as Mr. Smith."
Mr. Smith was a strange one. A man of few words but when he spoke you heard him. He was the quietest extrovert you'd ever meet. He sang and danced and made a fool of himself at every school production but off stage he was not the teacher you'd want to run into in the hallways. With round strong eyes and glasses, you couldn't help but notice how beautifully green his eyes were. A dark green. Earth like. His face was full and he was as dark in complexion as the burnt brown wood his desk was made of. His every move seemed like a dance step.
"He like boys or something?" Chris whispered from the seat behind with a chuckle. Chris and Adish went way back. Chris was there the first time Adish had to go to the neighborhood grocery on his own. He actually organized the beat down and robbery of Adish that day. They didn't start as the best of friends, but they were now.
"I don't even know. I just wanna leave bro, and go to physics. This year Ms. Jones teaching and I trying to get a front seat." Adish retorted.

"Watch nah, you see that just now?"

Adish turned to see Chris gesturing toward the window.

"What? The tree?"

"And that's where we got the masks that we use today. Right Mr. Adish?" Mr. Smith was now staring right at him.

"Um, yeah. Yeah."

The bell.

"Aright all, for homework you'll type up a short report on how we got these masks and used them to symbolize theatre. You are dismissed." Mr. Smith allowed the class to leave and began packing his briefcase. "Mr. Wright, glad to see you. I hope you enjoy your time as part of the theatre fraternity."

Adish, not knowing what to say, lifted his hand almost in salute and exited. Smith smiled and nodded at the door as it closed as if on command.
