everything is gray. plain with an intense lack of vibrance. this town is gray. my life was immensely gray.

two parts lack of color and one part depression. hell, even my last name was grayson.

however, it takes even a microscopic bit of color to turn a life around. color has a name and its name is violet walker. violet came into my life at a very strange time. i was finally discovering what it means to exist in a world where news stories and trends change faster than ramona flowers changed her hair. unless, perhaps you weren't familiar with scott pilgrim vs. the world. i was becoming self aware. self aware that i, dylan grayson of the apple farming town of julian, california will never be someone.

with today's technology, you're just a youtube video away from fame, but that's not what i wanted to be remembered for. i'd put lots of thought in what i wanted to be remembered for, but could never put it into words. in today's society, it takes a millisecond for someone to disagree with you. and i felt as if that at any given moment the world was disagreeing with me.

it took violet walker to turn my life around. violet walker gave vibrance to my once dull life. i was on the road to ruin before we met.

~

it took approximately a minute and 26 seconds of confidence from the spot i was standing to walk across the cracked parking lot of julian high school to where she was standing. i was awestruck from the beauty of her, her brown cascading hair shined in the light of the california sun. her eyes were fantastically colored, a blend of greens and browns that harmoniously filled her irises. she stood perfect next to her car, a classic red mustang that looked like it was from some year before 1970.

i glanced at the girl, admiring her grace. a minute and 26 seconds was all it took.

"h-hi."

"hi!" her voice was like a song. her words were the lyrics and her tone was the music.

"dylan grayson. and you?"

"violet walker." i loved the way violet sounded when i rolled it off my tongue.

"awesome. are you new here?"

"yeah. we just moved here from valencia."

"valencia. wow. great."

"yep. and you?"

"uh, well, i've spent my entire life here." unfortunately.

"well, i'll see you around."

"yep."

normally, a conversation i would hold with any other person would be short and awkward. i was never social, around girls, around guys, anyone. i had only one real friend. violet was different. i could talk, i could use my words. school was a non-vocal environment for me.

i carried on through the day. thinking about violet and how i'd spoken to her. did she even care? does she even care to remember my name? does she care for my existence as a human being?

all these thoughts floated around like dead fish at the brim of the fish bowl.

i made a new discovery on the way home from school. the house two doors down from mine had a moving van, parked stationary in front of it. burly men with beards and tattoos engaged in removing the contents from the van and placing them in the newly occupied home. a petite figure in a dress sat on the front porch, watching. it was violet, wearing the same dress as she was during the school day.

she waved at me. she remembered me. she cared enough to remember who i was. we had classes, of course, but during the day she was being mobbed by students eager to get the name of their new classmate. i always sat in the back of the classroom to avoid being noticed. in the two classes i shared with her today, she sat to the right, by the window.

i wondered what she wanted to see out of that window. if there was anything in particular she was searching for.

i waved and smiled back through my car window. she had a smile that could light up the hallways of julian high school.

i'm not a firm believer in love at first sight, but this seems pretty damn close.

okay so that's the end of the first chapter. i want feedback! feel free to comment your opinion. this story is written in lowercase letters for a reason. (it's in the title, obviously.)

this might be a little rocky because i'm a girl writing from a guy's pov but i have a lot planned for dylan's character.

i've noticed that this chapter is incredibly short but i promise you that the following chapters will be longer. it's 2 am and i haven't blogged for like 2 hours so i'm outtie.

thanks for reading! - averi
