Prologue
I am scared. I have been scared sense my best friend Lola was killed three years ago. I will never stop being scared, but now I don't know if the same thing will happen to me.
Every year there are people who die, but not like this. Lola was thought to be a potential. A human that was more than human. They are considered dangerous, but not just that. The ruler of the world, Solomon, fears that the potentials will kill him. He made a law;"If you think someone is a potential, turn them in. We will take no chances. We will kill them with joy." He finds them to have to much power. They can save the world from him, or destroy the world trying. That's to much power for his liking. He would rather kill everyone.
Tomorrow is my thirteenth birthday. Thirteen is the year that the potentials receive their power, whatever it may be. If I am one of them, I will never be able to see my family again. If I wake up as one of them, I will die.
Chapter 1
Beads of sweat drip off my chin. I run, away from my life, away from all I've ever known. The woods will keep me safe. They will welcome me, they will forgive me for what I have become. They won't see me as a monster. They won't kill me. They won't abandon me. My body propels me, but then I collapse. Tears roll down my face. I am alone. I will always be alone. My family will never take me back. They will never love me again. Waterfalls poor down my cheeks and make the ground sodden. I am a potential. I can never go home.
I wake with a start. My face is wet, and I am covered in sweat. "Mom" I yell down the hall. "Mom" I cry. I need to see her and my dad. I need them to tell me that they love me. If I wake up a potential tomorrow, I will lose them forever. I need them now. "Yes Hun?" My mom said. "Do you love me?" "Of course. Nothing could ever change that" "I needed to hear that. Thanks." I hug her and my dad. One last time I said "I love you guys" " We love you Corinthea" they said. I head back to my room. I don't sleep for the rest of the night.
Chapter 2
I crept out of bed. I didn't know what to expect. I don't want to die! What if I am different? As I walk I don't feel cold, even tho it is almost winter. Wait, why aren't I cold? Usually I'm freezing! I walk over to the mirror in my bedroom. My eyes are bright blue like always, but today they seem even brighter. My hair seems to be brushed perfectly, and the curls fall perfectly on my shoulder. I look perfect. No bed head. No imperfections. What is going on?
I turn around to get some clothes from my dresser when I see something peculiar. There is a trail of ice across the room where I just walked. The mirror is now covered in ice as well. What is going on? All of the sudden my vision goes blue in a flash of brilliant light. All I hear is the ringing in my ears. I am sprawled out on the floor. When I open my eyes the ringing and blue are gone. I see water drops floating in the air around me. All the ice everywhere melted; except for around me. I am scared. I am a potential, I know it. There is no way around it. I need to say good bye to my family and leave.Chapter 3
I walk down the hallway, trying ever so hard not to cry. It takes all of my will power. My worst nightmare has come true, and there is nothing I can do to change that. My heart seems to be thumping out of my chest. Ice spreads up the walls as I walk. My parents are still asleep. I think my sister, Melody, is awake. I write a note telling my parents I love them.
"Mom, Dad, sometimes things you cannot control happen. Things you can't prevent or understand. I need to leave. I am no longer safe here. I love you both dearly, and I'm sorry it has come to this. I will hopefully see you again. I love you Melody. I hope you are successful in life. I will never forget you guys! Good bye.
With love everlasting,
Corinthea "My hand shakes as I finish writing. The ink drips from the pen and my tears smudge some words, but it will do. I lye it on the kitchen counter, and go into the living room, looking at all the pictures of me and my family hanging on the wall. In one, me and my sister are on swings at the old park. Mom pushes me, and Dad pushes Melody. We are all smiling and you can see the orange trees in the background, and you can almost feel the cool October breeze. I take the picture, then go back to my room to get a weeks worth of clothes. I stuff them in a draw string bag and then put the picture on top. I left the empty frame hanging on the wall.
