In the early Republic, there were no public schools, so boys were taught to read and write by their parents, or by educated slaves, called paedagogi. These slaves were usually of Greek Origin. After many conquests the Romans did, the education system was modified. After this, students at the age of twelve went to secondary school where the teacher called a grammaticus taught them about Greek and Roman literature. At the age of 16, some students went on to rhetoric school, where the teacher was called a Rhetor. Education at this stage set students for lawful careers The students were required that they memorize the laws of Rome. Students went to school every day, except religious festivals and market days. Just like we have summer vacation today, the students of Ancient Rome did as well!
