Chapter 5

The next day seems to inch by as slow as it possibly can. Mum is staring out the window again, so I resume my regular routine, making breakfast and lunch, my mind focusing on the one bright spot on the horizon- meeting Liam tomorrow. I accidentally fall asleep in first period english, which I've never done. I find myself itching to go to fourth period, where I'll get to talk to Liam. I really enjoy talking to him, and no matter how much Kaylie tries to convince me otherwise, it's because he's entertaining, not because I fancy him.

The second the bell rings, ending my seemingly interminable third period, I bolt out of my seat and walk through the halls slower, realizing that Liam probably won't get to class this early. I take my time to walk to math, with some difficulty, because I've had such a boring day, and I need to talk to someone like Liam to make it better.

When I walk in, the seats are normal again, and I choose one near the middle of the back. There is a substitute teacher, and there is a worksheet that we are supposed to do. Just before the bell rings, Liam comes in, and takes the open seat next to me.

"Hey, Mira," he says, smiling sweetly at me. I feel a blush creeping up my neck. What the hell? This is just Liam, my friend. Liam saying hi does not cue blushing, okay?

"Hi Liam," I reply, attempting a casual grin. "Did you do the homework?"

Liam looks momentarily panicked. "What homework?" He even rifles through his binder, when he looks up at me suddenly, frowning. "We didn't have any- Mira, when did you get so mean?"

I laugh. "You're so gullible."

"No, you're just not very nice," Liam says, pouting. His pout makes me want to just hug him, but I control that urge.

"Well, you're not too nice yourself. Remember the time you poured hot sauce on my slice of your birthday cake?"

"I still think it was a good combination," he says, shrugging. I shove him lightly, and we both start laughing. We spend the rest of class talking about random stuff we could remember from when we were kids. I couldn't remember the last time I'd felt so carefree and happy. Even before my dad died, I was never a social kid, and didn't have many good friends.

The bell rings in the middle of mine and Liam's argument about whether Monsters, Inc or Toy Story was a better movie.

"You haven't gotten any better at arguing," Liam says as we gather the papers we forgot to do in class. I tilt my head, and ask, "Is that a compliment or an insult?"

"Since you can't possibly get better, it's a compliment," Liam says, and for some reason, that small, insignificant statement warms me to my toes.

"Why thank you," I say, acting flattered.

"You're very welcome, my dear," Liam says grandly. I grin at him, and he smiles back. He really is quite good looking. "We're meeting tomorrow, right?"

"Yeah," I say, suddenly feeling ridiculously happy. "The downtown coffeeshop, right?"

"Yeah, " Liam says, grinning. "Three o'clock,?"

"Yup," I say, with a stupid smile on my face. "See you later, then."

"See you around," Liam says with a smile. He waves to one of his friends who is walking by, and waves back to me.

I try to wipe the idiotic smile stuck on my face as I turn around and see Kaylie walking towards me. I can tell she saw me smiling, because she has her trademark smirk on her face.

"Not ditching me again, are you?" she says. "I mean, you're seeing Liam tomorrow anyway."

"I'm eating lunch with you, Kay," I say, laughing. "Liam's got a few more friends than I do, you know."
