One day, a beloved companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Tha'labah ibn AbdiRahman (may Allah be pleased with him), 16, was running an errand for the Prophet (peace be upon him), as usual. On this occasion, while he was running the errand, he passes by a house. And the door of that house was widely opened. So Tha'labah, looked inside. There was a curtain, and that curtain was used to cover the bathing area. So all of a sudden, a wind blows in the house, causing the curtain to fly open, and SubhanAllah, there in the bathing area was a woman, washing herself. Now Tha'labah didn't know what to do in this situation. He didn't mean to look at that, and even when he came back to his senses he said to himself(may Allah be pleased with him). How can I ever call myself a Companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and do what I just did?" What if Allah reveals a Verse on my behalf, telling the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the sahabas that I became a Hypocrite?" He feared to return to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he ran away. SubhanAllah! Hours passed, and days passed, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked the other Companions about Tha'labah. Have you seen him? No one seems to know where he disappeared to. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) sends Umar ibn Al Khattab and Salman Al Farsi (may Allah be pleased with them both), to look for Tha'labah. Umar and Salman go looking in Madinah, in the streets, and valleys, and still no sign of Tha'labah. Then, Umar and Salman check the outskirts of Madinah and they come across some bedouins who asked them what they were looking for. So Umar and Salman gave the description of Tha'labah and said, "We are looking for him, do you happen to know where he is?"They said yes, and they said, "The boy you are talking about has been crying for 40 days up on a mountain, and asking Allah for forgiveness and only comes down at Maghrib (sunset) to have some milk, but then goes crying again". After hearing this, Umar and Salman go up to Tha'labah and Tha'labah, shocked, asks,"Why are you here? Has a Verse been revealed about me in the Quran? They said, "No." Come back with us to the Prophet(peace be upon him). So Tha'labah goes back to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Prophet runs up to him and hugs Tha'labah. And he cries and cries. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) puts Tha'labah's head on his thigh. And then Tha'labah says at that moment, "Oh RasulAllah, don't let a head of sins lay on your lap!" And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Oh Tha'labah, what do you wish for? Tha'labah says, " I wish for the mercy of Allah (Exalted be He). Then the Prophet says, "What are you afraid of ?" Tha'labah says, "I'm afraid of the Punishment of Allah". Then the Prophet (peace be upon him says), "What do you hope for?" Then Tha'labah says, " I hope for the forgiveness of Allah". So the Prophet (peace be upon him) made dua for him and aksed Allah to forgive him, then he passed away. At his funeral, when the Prophet was carrying the body, along with the sahabas, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was walking on his toes, as if there was no space to walk. So the Sahabas ask. " Oh Prophet (peace be upon him), why are you walking like that when you have so much room?" Then the Prophet said: "No, for the angels are here right now, and there are so many of them, helping to carry the body of Tha'labah ibn AbdiRahman "(may Allah be pleased with him).
SubhanAllah! Look at how this young man, 16, feared Allah, just by accidentally looking at something he didn't mean to look at, he freaked out. And now we are here just committing sins like there's always a tomorrow. We should, for the sake of Allah, repent, because we don't know when our time is up. And most importantly, don't ever minimize the sins you commit. Don't make it seem like its no big deal, cause it is, for you never know what your fate will be because of that sin.
Anas (May be pleased with him) said:
You indulge in (bad) actions which are more insignificant to you than a hair while we considered them at the time of Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to be great destroying sins"
May Allah Guide each and every single one of us!
