"Well..here ya go." Mr. Wells said opening up the door to my small cottage. "Now it's not much but you'll make it work? Won't ya." He cheerfully said giving me a small pat on the back.
"It should do." I say putting the box I had in my hand on the dusty wooden floors.
"Now, I give you my okay to do whatever you like to the house, just don't take out the flooring." He said pointing at the floor. I nodded my head. "Where are you working?"
"Um, the diner down the road. I'm waitress."
"Old Hanks?"
"Yup." I slowing said popping the "p".
"That place has been here for years. Tyler Bennit took after it after his dad died. It's a family business." I looked out the window to look for the U-Haul. I saw three men get out and start taking out my stuff. "Would you like me to help?" My Wells asked looking at the boxes that laid on the ground.
"Um, I should be fine on my own. But thanks for the offer."
"Well then, I guess I should get going. Someone else is moving into one of my rentals." He said pointing at the cottage right across from mine. It looked similar to mine. Except theirs had blue shutters and mine are grey.
"Have a good day Mr. Wells." I said as he walked out the door. When he left I look took a look at my boxes. I only had four boxes in the U-Haul and the rest were on the plane with me. I didn't take much. Just dishes, some cloths and other decorations. I watched as the U-Haul drove off. The dust from the gravel working it's way up to my house. I coughed a little as the dust went in my mouth. I looked around to see Mr.Wells showing the cottage right next to me. I saw the girl. She look around my age, she had blond hair and really tan skin. I didn't realize how long I was staring because the girl came over to me.
"Hello." She said is a bright, cheerful tone. "My name is Ashley." She said holding out a hand.
"I'm Jess." I said shaking her hand.
"Would you like me to help you with your boxes?" She said gesturing toward the stack.
"Um, no thanks. But thanks anyways."
"Come on, don't be silly. I'd like to help." She said taking one of the boxes and heading up the porch stairs. "Yours looks exactly like mine. But my floors are dark wood not light." She said looking around. "So, where'd you move from?"
"Um, London." She set the box down on the floor and looked at me. "Why'd you move here, out of all places." "I shrugged.
"I just needed a do-over."
"What London wasn't enough."
"I was getting tired of all the clutter and too many tourist. They get really annoying after a while."
"Hm,still why did you move here? This place has nothing really."
"It looked nice on the website. It still does look nice." She looked at me then went back to unpacking and setting stuff on the table. "Why did you move?"
"I wanted to come back. Miami was to much for me. Too many fake people, people pretending to be what their not. If I had a dollar for every time I saw somebody trying to have sex on the beach I'd have like $30, but the police would tell them to knock it off or an angry mom would tell them to stop. Same thing everyday."
"Have you lived here before?"
"My whole life. When I was younger all I wanted to do was get out of this little, boring town. But about two months ago all I wanted to do was come back." She said sighing. "Where do you work?"
"Old Hanks." She laughed a little.
"That little dinner is still standing? I remember when just about all the high schooler's went down there after school. I remember I had my first kiss there and my friend Lacy lost her virginity on one the of the stalls. So many memories packed into on little diner." She said putting some cups on the cupboard.
"I remember me and my friends would go down to this little pub after school."
"And.." She said waiting for me to go on.
"And, that's it. Well my boyfriend dumped me for Piper Grey."
"She sounds like a bitch."
"Yeah, big time." Ashley giggled a little. I look at her for a while and realized that I wouldn't be as alone as I thought I'd be. I smiled to myself thinking that England isn't my home anymore, this was my home and I was proud to call it home.
