Night came upon them quicker than they expected. Callie sat in her bed, thoughts upon thoughts upon thoughts swimming around her brain. Mariana had long drifted to sleep, along with the other family members, and she was left alone for her mind to wander.
Frustrated, she got out of bed to use the bathroom when she heard a low sound coming from Brandon’s room. She overheard what he had told Stef and hoped he was playing his piano. Peaking in, she saw Brandon lounged on his bed, his hands behind his head as he watched some tv. Disappointed, she knocked on the door, and he looked up surprised. “Come in,” he said.
Callie walked in and Brandon scooted over so she could sit beside him. Cautiously she looked around before sitting. “I couldn’t sleep and was wondering if you could play that piano piece you showed me the first day I went to your school.”
“I-I don’t know, I’m not really in the mood for playing. Plus it’d wake everyone up.”
“There’s a volume button on your keyboard,” Callie replied smirking. “And what do you mean you’re not ‘in the mood.’”
“I just don’t want to okay.” His voice was suddenly filled with irritation and Callie noticed. She quickly walked out of his room, and was back in less than 30 seconds. In her hand, she held the guitar he gave her. “What are you doing?” he asked.
“I thought we could practice,” she replied flashing a pearly white smile at him. He sighed and sat up.
“Alright.” He walked over to his keyboard, flipped the switch on and turned the volume down so it was barely audible. “Let’s play.”
Strumming on the strings gently, Callie began to create a beautiful melody while cuddled up on Brandon’s bed. Brandon was at his keyboard, playing diligently as he enjoyed the music they were making. It was almost as if they were having a conversation through their music. Callie would play a minor chord, and Brandon would play higher notes as if to cheer her up. It was such an amazing feeling.
They forgot all about what time it was and where they were. All that mattered was the music and the fact they were both next to the one person they needed.
Stef was awakened by the sound and peaked into Brandon’s room, seeing Callie sitting there strumming her guitar and Brandon working his magic. She smiled at them, a little worried, but happy Brandon had found the will to play again. She reminded herself to say thank you to Callie in the morning for helping him out.
Stef had returned to her room and Callie had begun to get tired. She felt her body lay back against Brandon’s headboard, but continued to play from an awkward position. Brandon smiled when he saw her and before he knew it she had fallen asleep. He laughed and tucked her in, contemplating whether to kiss her forehead goodnight. She wasn’t awake so he took the risk, but he was wrong. Callie was just barely conscious and felt his sweet lips touch her skin, making her forehead all warm. She smiled as Brandon turned his back continued to play the keyboard, catching up with the tasks he neglected to do while feeling down. Eventually he got tired too and had fallen asleep sat upright in his chair with his head on the keyboard.
Uh oh…what do you think will happen?
