I'm mildly upset that I'm only 6 months away from graduating, yet I still don't have enough credits to actually successfully escape this hell. Now I'm trapped in this painfully boring after school meeting for those of us who have not met the requirements. The good part is that my best friend Tay is in here with me. She has a high GPA but it's no where near as high as mine, and neither of us are eligible to graduate due to a few missing credits.
Mr. Sykes is continuing to talk about things he repeats constantly. His role as a sepiternal broken record is rage inducing. "As you all know, you need 120 credits or you will not be graduating with the rest of your class," he reiterated for the billionth time this year. He manages to be more insufferable by clearly stating we are already aware of the information he is given and still has the gall to mention it again. Fourty hours of community service will earn 8 credits. I grin realizing I only need eight more to graduate.
"Hey Mr. Sykes, what tasks are considered community service?" I asked in a tone that expressed genuine interest.
"Well Kellin we do have a vacant position if you are interested."
"Like what?"
"There's an opening at the Harbor Oaks Hospital"
"Is that it?" Kellin asked with a puzzled look.
"That's the only one I have on hand, finding an external source is acceptable though.
Tay and I exchanged questioning glances. I really don't feel like going out and really looking for anything else so I don't have any choice but to take Mr. Sykes up on his offer. Well was it really an offer? No it was more like a suggestion. Well whatever it was I really have no other option.
So eventually after Mr. Sykes completed the longest, most repetitive lecture of all time me and Tay left to go to my house.
"So what are you gonna to get those last few credits Kellin?"
"I might just have to actually do that for my community service."
"Do you really wanna work with crazy people for hours?"
"I think I can handle it."
"As long as you don't become one of them," Tay says whilst winking playfully.
**********
So here we go. Mr. Sykes told me he called them and told them that I was coming already. I guess this is official...this is stuck being my community service. It's only forty hours. What can go wrong?
"Umm... Hello my name is Kellin..."
"Ah yes. Kellin Quinn, right this way."
As I walk past all I see are nurses in scrubs and patients in slippers and baggy shirts and sweatpants. It's a creepy site honestly, in a homey sort of feel. Multiple patients look at me, some have cleaning masks on for some reason.
"Excuse me Dr. Perry, Mr. Quinn is here to see you"
"Thank you Lynn, you are dismissed."
As I sit slowly in front of a desk with a name tag on it reading Tony Perry, I admired the surrounding diplomas on the wall. The were all in psychology and there were many for the Harbor Oaks Hospital in general.
"So Mr. Sykes told me you're looking for for final credits to graduate. We have an excellent facility here to assist the mentally ill . We have a large demographic of patients ranging from the ages of 18-70, receiving nothing less than the best care. I will arrange for you to care for a young man by the name Victor Vincent Fuentes. He is 22 years old, fairly close to you in age, so you should not have much trouble relating to him. However, I feel it is best to warn you about him in advance.
"What is it?"
"Victor is more...sexually active I might say, and he can be a bit repulsive and unsettling at times," he mentions in a low, uneasy tone.
I visibly cringed at the last part. It was quite obvious that Victor Fuentes was not given to me so we could relate but rather the fact that no one else wanted to deal with him. This forty hours would be better suited with the name forced labor than community service. My angst began began to get the better of me as a horrid question refused to cease its invasion of my mind.
What kind of sick masochist dwells in this establishment?
