The next few days were filled with awkward tension. Brandon avoided Callie as much as possible, silence filling his room as he refused to play the keyboard. He mostly slept, and ate less and less each day. Callie observed from a distance as he drifted away. She blamed herself constantly, and found herself locked in her room most of the time, playing on the guitar pretending Brandon was beside her on his piano.

The next Saturday morning seemed to be going the same way the rest of the week had. That was until Brandon picked up his keys and asked Callie if she was ready to leave for group therapy.

“Uh,” she glanced hesitantly at Stef who was stood by the kitchen cabinets on the phone. “Yeah I am.” She stood up awkwardly, picking up her breakfast plate too. She dropped it in the sink before grabbing her phone and following behind Brandon who was already out the door.

The car was silent for the first mile, Callie just watching out the window as houses passed by. Brandon glanced at her every few minutes, his hands tightening on the wheel in frustration. “Callie,” he finally said, his voice sounding angry and harsh unlike what Callie was use to around him. She was too afraid to answer him so she turned her head to look at him to show him he had her attention. “What are we?” he asked her.

“What are you talking about?” she responded, awkwardly shifting her weight as far from him as possible.

“Don’t play stupid,” he snapped. Realizing how harsh he sounded, he paused and thought for a couple of seconds. He opened his mouth and glanced at Callie while the car met a red light. “I love you.” He took a deep breath and then, with a much calmer voice, he spoke again. “I love you, and I don’t know if you love me, but I know you feel something for me. Callie I’ve never met anyone that has fascinated me as much as you do.”

“I can’t,” she whispered, tears falling from her eyes as she placed her face in her hands. “You know I can’t.”

“I know that it’s not practical being foster siblings. I know my moms’ wouldn’t be too happy. What I do know is that you and Jude aren’t going anywhere no matter what.”

Callie didn’t answer and Brandon began to get tense. They had reached the group therapy by then and parked on the side of the street. Callie went to get out, but Brandon grabbed her arm. “Sit,” he commanded. She obediently sat back down in her seat, her head hanging as she began to cry. “Don’t cry please,” Brandon whispered, his anger melting away as he saw her in pain. He placed his pointer finger underneath her chin, moving her head and forcing her eyes to meet his.

“I love you too,” she cried, tears now streaming down her face and sobs shaking her body feeling relief for finally being able to admit how she felt. Brandon’s green eyes starred into her chocolate colored ones intensely, his lips in a tight line as he watched her. He slowly lifted her chin, his lips hovering over hers as the feeling of his hot breath against her skin made her shiver. He lifted his other hand to wipe away her tears with his thumb, some still falling loosely from her bloodshot eyes. Finally, his lips met hers. For the brief fifteen seconds that their lips were connected, Callie forgot she was a foster child and that her mom was dead and her dad was in jail. She forgot who anyone else was, or what her name even was. The only thing she was focused on was Brandon’s moist lips against hers.

Brandon pulled away, looking at Callie to make sure she was alright with what just happened. As if she read his mind, she smiled and grabbed the back of his head, pulling him towards her and kissing him once again.

“You got to get to therapy,” Brandon whispered, his lips parting a centimeter away from hers. She sighed and released her hold on Brandon.

                “I know.”

“I’ll be here when you get out okay,” he grinned.

“Something to look forward to I guess,” she replied. “See you soon.”
