I stood in line for the American Xfactor, heart racing and knees shaking. No matter what happened today, my life would be changed forever. Whether it was in a good way or bad, I didn't know that yet. Only about 100 more people had to sing before it would be my tern, and what seemed like alot of time before i had to sing, felt like an instant.
"May, are you ready to become famous?" my best friend, Carly screeched next to me. I bit my lip anxiously and shrugged. Ive gotten a few, 'your goods.' And a couple, ' how are you not discovered, yets.' But that didn't mean I had what it takes to win this competition. I mean, out of thousands of people auditioning, the odds of me even getting through we're slim, let alone getting a 3 million dollar contract deal with Syco records!? Even being here, performing in front of Demi Lovato, Simon Cowel, Brittany Spears, and L.A. Reid, was surreal.
What seemed like minutes passed, before a young guy, about 21, called out. "Mayberry Thompson, your up next." I waved goodbye to my best friend, parents, and grandparents, and slowly walked to the steps that would take me to the stage, only a few steps up, where I could watch the performer in front of me without being seen.
He was an older guy. Probably in his 60s or something of the like. I didn't pay much attention to the introductions, but his voice is what caught my attention. It wasn't that it was bad, but it certainly wasn't good.
"Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
He's down on his luck...it's tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay
For love - for love
Says sh-" suddenly the music stopped and I saw Simons hand raised.
The man stopped singing and stood up straighter, trying not to look intimidated by the one and only Mr. Simon Cowel.
"Was I that bad?" The man asked, trying to hold back tears.
"No!"
"Yes!"
Simon and Demi both belted at the same time. "You have a very good voice, and I enjoyed your performance very much." Demi smiled.
"I agree with Demi, it was good, but Im not sure if its good enough." L.A spoke sympathetically. I found myself liking Mr. Reid more and more.
"I don't think you would get very far in this competition." Brittany announced.
Simon nodded his head. Agreeing with Brittany's statement. "It was boring, and unoriginal. You sounded like a cheap version of Bon Jovi, and nobody would buy your album, when there's already someone out there who already sings like you do, but better." The man looked ready to burst into tears, but stood his ground and waited for the voting.
Demi: yes
LA: yes
Brittany: no, sorry.
Simon: never.
The man exited the stage looking defeated. He gave me a sad smile and a pat on the back, trying to reassure me my performance wouldn't end up like his. As he walked away towards two teenage, and two adults. One being his eldest, and his loving wife, I saw him wipe a tear from his eye. Simons comment must have really gotten to him.
"They're ready for you Mrs. Thompson." An older, fatter woman spoke, as if ushering me into a private meeting. The only thing was, was this wasn't private. I was about to preform in front of 2,000 audience members, Four celebrities, and possibly all of America. I stepped onto the stage nervously, and then looked up, only to be met by the blinding lights of the stage. I could barely see anyone past the judges. "Hello." Simon spoke. "What's your name, your age, and where are you from?"
I smiled a small smile, trying to act brave and confident, but it seemed to be as if I was failing miserably. "My name is Mayberry Thompson, But everyone calls me May. Im 16 and, and I live right here, in California."
"Brilliant, what song will you be singing for us today?"
"Lovin' You, By: Minnie Riperton."
I heard a small gasp from the audience, watched as Simons eyes widen, and the remaining three judges look at me apprehensively.
"Are you sure?" Simon questioned. I thought about It for a minute, suddenly unsure. "Yes, I am sure." I lied. "Ready whenever you are." Simon spoke.
I nodded at no one in particular, and I heard the quietness of the birds chirping and music playing, as part of the introduction. I opened my mouth and started singing.
"Lovin' you is easy cause you're beautiful
Makin' love with you is all I wanna do
Lovin' you is more than just a dream come true
And everything that I do is out of lovin' you"
To prepare myself for this next part, I closed my eyes and breathed in through my mouth.
"La la la la la la la... do do do do do" I got through that part with little struggle and continued.
"No one else can make me feel
The colors that you bring
Stay with me while we grow old
And we will live each day in springtime
Cause lovin' you has made my life so beautiful
And every day my life is filled with lovin' you."
Simon held up his hands, signaling for the music, and I to both stop singing. I started panicking. Was I good, or bad, or terrible or-- I was cut off in my thoughts by the sound of bitter silence. Nobody was clapping... This was bad.
Suddenly, Simon stood up in his seer and started a slow and steady clap, which was soon followed by the whole audience bursting into loud catcalls and applause. The other judges stood up and started clapping as well. I was awestruck. They were clapping... For me? I wasn't that good, to get a round of applause and standing ovation from all for judges and the whole audience, was I?
"I think all we need to do is vote." LA spoke.
Demi: 100% yes.
LA: You and your performance were perfect. Yes.
Brittany: Of course! Yes, yes, 1 million times yes.
Simon: You've got four yes's, your going through to boot camp!
I was going to boot camp. I made it through. I smiled, waved, and ran of the stage. Right into my family and friends waiting arms.
