And so it begins...

It was a warm spring morning in the Southern Hemisphere. David, as usual, had woken up at seven fifteen, had taken a warm shower, shaved and was having breakfast. Like every wednesday, he was checking in his mobile expandable phone the technology news in different sites with weekly updates. The coffee was bitter than usual, probably because he had changed the brand in his last supermarket visit. It seemed that he would need to add one more spoonful of sugar to every cup of this brand.

David was a young man, 29 years old, dark brown hair and honey colored eyes. He was fairly tall, but he though he was average like everyone else, though a lot of people praised him for his 185 centimeters of height, being fairly athletic. He considered himself a tech addict, in fact, his appartment in São Paulo downtown had all the latest technological conforts, most of them created by his own company. In spite of this, he was a man of routines, following them religiously day after day. When he was only 19 years old, he had invented a revolutionary biometric identification system, which helped improve the retail, banking, transport and other industries radically, by reducing frauds by 85%, and increasing positive identification of felons by 75%. He also made a more effective Brain-Digital interface, which increased the manufacturing industries production greatly. The sales of his inventions allowed him to live confortably, with enough capital to invest in other companies, opening his own enterprise and continue with his inventions. He had a good life.

David was deeply immersed in his reading when his mobile rang, the visor showed a man with black hair, a big ear-to-ear smile and a scar in his neck. "Leo Calling"

-   Hello? David?

-   ¡Leo! How Are you?

-   Great and you? It's been a while since I heard from you. What have you been up to?

-  Oh, nothing, just spending some time in my appartment in São Paulo, trying to get some inspiration

-  So that's the reason I couldn't get a hold on you. Why don't you come a few days to Rome? I'm here with Jennifer, and she told me she would love to see you...

-  Thanks for the invitation Leo, but I'm kind of busy at the moment... Do you remember the housing project "Farscape"?

-   Of  Course! Has something happened?

-   No, nothing to be worried about. To tell you the truth it's kind of in a jam, I've had a few problems to organize my thoughts...

- All the more reasons for you to take a few days off... Come on David! I'm sending you the tickets to your mail... Is that ok?

-   Only if the both of you come to São Paulo afterwards....

-   Always the negotiator Dev... Fine, a few days in Rome, a few days in São Paulo. Is that ok Jenny? She says it's fine. See you on Saturday!

He hung up the phone. Immediately after, he remembered old times with Leo, when both were 14 and 16 years old respectively, living in New Jersey's suburbs. He remembered the day when they saw the military service drafting list, and both of them saw the name "Leonardo Romano" on it. He also remembered the day when Leo took the bus to go to the military training. And the day he received the call from his best friend telling him he was shipping off to war. A lot had happened since then, completely different life paths, and nonetheless very intertwined. Leo had been his best friend for life and their friendship was strong as ever, inspite of the situations that had happened. Today, Leo was Dev's Security Chief. A second call took him out of his remembrance. "Office calling"

-    Mister Dryden?

-    Please, Sophía, call me David

-   Mister David, I'm calling to remind you of the board meeting next week, on friday. Jack Huggins asked me to remind you.

-    Tell Jack I'll be there... And to keep up the good work!.

-    Ok Mr. David. Remember to call me if you need anything else. Have a nice day!

-    Bye, Sophía

Since he had arrived to São Paulo five days earlier, the same routine had happened every single day. Pick up the phone call from his office at nine fifteen in the morning, to determine the course of action for the day. "No rest for the wicked" came to his mind. And his life was just like this, no resting.

He went back to his workshop, where some of the most advanced prototypes of his company were located. From small lockpicking electronic gadgets to the base block for his housing project "Farscape", that were being built for the colonization of Mars with ultrafast housing building blocks. Mars was reached only two years before the current year. "A small step for man..." He remembered Armstrong's quote. "If he only knew" David thought for himself.

Considered an innovative force in the technology industry, David had achieved to push the boundries of the unknown, reaching great successes where other companies had only succeeded partially. He had failed a couple of times, yes, but David considered failure as an opportunity to grow, improve and innovate, as some of the industry's predecessors at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st.

Inspite of all his attempts, he remained distracted. A recurrent dream didn't allow him to sleep at night, but when he woke up he was not able to recall all the details. Only a sweet soft woman's voice was ringing in his head. He didn't make anything of it... The dream came every night, and was more familiar than it should have been, but everytime he woke up, an emptiness feeling was all that was left. He would talk it out with his psychologist eventually, but currently, he needed to work on the project, if he was to reach the deadline of the contractor.
