"My place is just up ahead."
I didn't trust this Rowan, if that's even his name. Who knows anymore? The guy chased me through the woods so could get stuck in a trap! Evidently you can't trust bushes either because some of them are traps set by psycho guys named Rowan!
But, whatever. At least I wouldn't be in the dark with the bloodthirsty aliens all over.
His house was kind of small, but still bigger than the cave I shared with everyone else. There was a fire in the middle of the entry, and the entire thing was made of branches and sticks.
"Make yourself at home, there's a fire if you're cold, the stream's just through those trees if you want water, and I got a pretty good bed arrangement if you're tired." I stood and glared at his stupid, smiling, handsome face.
"Kay."
"You're still mad about the bush aren't you."
"Yes of course I'm mad! I thought I was gonna die, hell, I still don't know if I'm gonna die or not!"
"I told you already, I'm not gonna hurt you."
"Who said dying hurts all the time? You could've poisoned me already! Half my organs could be shut down already, I dont know how that shit works. You probably do, you have mechanical bushes just waiting to-"
"Kid! I'm sorry I trapped you in a bush, but I swear I will not hurt, or kill you. Jesus, you talk too much."
"That's rude..." One thing still didn't make sense, "Why am I here then?"
He looked at me for a second, and then sat by the fire. "You never told me your name."
"Way to change the subject. My name's Blaine though."
"Nice to meet you Blaine. How old are you?"
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Why, so you can sell me into slavery? That's it isn't it? You won't hurt or kill me, but someone else will."
"You have some serious trust issues Blaine. I'm trying to make smalltalk. I'm not into human trafficking."
"Oh. I'm 17 then."
An awkward silence filled the air, probably due to my angry outbursts. He was cooking something over the fire while I drew in the dirt with a twig I found.
"So what's with you wandering around the forest alone, kid? You're tiny."
"First of all, I already told you not to call me that. Also, I'm not tiny, just a little short." He snorted.
"So why, Blaine, is a someone 'a little short' like you wandering around the woods alone?"
"I'm looking for food to bring back to this cave I live in with a bunch of other people. This old lady named Sheila nominated me to go cause she's a bitch."
"Tell ya what, tomorrow morning we'll go back to your place. I'll even give you guys some of the extra food I have."
Maybe he wasn't so bad after all...
*the next morning*
Rowan and I had started walking back to the cave. We followed the stream until we found the berry bushes I had seen the day before.
The longer I was with him, the less threatening he seemed. I didn't have anyone at the cave who was even close to my age, and it was nice talking to someone who didn't treat you like a kid all the time. Even though he still called me kid.
Soon we came across the hole that I had crawled out.
"Wait here." I told Rowan.
I slid down into the cave. Everyone greeted me and cheered when they saw all the food I had. Even Sheila seemed happy. Once everything was set, I climbed back out to thank Rowan. But as soon as I stuck my head out, I realized that the cave was surrounded. Large men stood with weapons aimed at the opening of the cave.
"Rowan?" He looked apologetic.
"Blaine, come here. I promise you won't get hurt."
"What about everyone else?"
He was silent before coming over to me and throwing me over his shoulder. I kicked and screamed as he started walking back into the woods. In the distance I saw the men stomping on the crack in the ground and heard everyone I knew and cared about start screaming.
"ROWAN, PUT ME DOWN! WHAT DID YOU DO?" I was crying now, and he sighed before carefully placing me on the ground.
"I'm so, so sorry Blaine. This is my job. I track humans and lead my people to them. What happens afterward, I don't know."
"You're one of the aliens?" I started backing up.
"Blaine, listen-"
"And you're killing all those innocent people?" I started running, even though he could catch me if he wanted with no problem, and I had nowhere to go. Anywhere was better than here.
