Jenna:
Yesterday wasn't a good day. Yesterday Julien and I learned I wasn't pregnant. But today will be different. Today will be a happy day, and so will tomorrow, and the next day. We're going to make every day a happy day.
Today is Sunday, and Jason and Gabs are coming over tonight. It's been a few weeks since we last saw them, since they'd been on a vacation, so I'm excited to see them. For now, though, Julien and I need to podcast.
I walk downstairs and into the kitchen to find my Otter making breakfast. I walk up behind him and wrap my arms around his waist.
"Morning, babe." I say lightly.
"Good morning, Ot." He replies, turning around to kiss me.
"Whatcha making?" I ask, stepping away and leaning against the kitchen counter.
"Eggs and bacon. But I'll make you something if you want." He suggests, since those two foods are basically the opposite of what my vegan diet allows.
"That's ok, I'll just have cereal." I reply, opening the cabinet where we keep our bowls. "But thank you." I grab a bowl and kiss his cheek as I walk to the other side of the kitchen.
Gabs:
Jason and I haven't see Jenna or Julien in a couple weeks and I can't wait to go over to their house tonight. I'm excited not just because I miss them, but because we have big news.
I'm pregnant! Jason and I have been thinking about having a baby for a little while and we're so lucky that on our first try, we got pregnant. I cannot wait to tell Jenna and Julien, I know they'll be so excited for us.
Julien:
Jenna and I just finished podcasting - we talked about more conspiracy theories - and Jason and Gabs should be here soon.
"Hey, Ot?" Jenna asks, sitting on the opposite couch from me.
"Uh huh?" I respond.
"Do you think we should look tell Jason and Gabs about us trying to have a baby?" She says, a confused tone braided into her words.
"Uh.." I pause to think, "I don't think so. I think we can tell them when we are pregnant that we've been trying for a while, but right now it-" I'm interrupted by the doorbell.
"Ok, I gotcha." Jenna says, standing up to go answer the door.
Jenna:
"Hi, guys!" Gabs cries as I open the door.
"Hi!" I reply, just as excited, and pull her into a hug. Julien, who's standing behind me, hugs Jason, and then we switch.
We migrate to the den and start to catch up. Eventually, Gabs says they have big news.
"Tell us!" I exclaim, wondering what their announcement could be.
"Well.." She pauses and looks lovingly at Jason, "I'm pregnant!"
The words seem to dig into my chest. I hear myself congratulate her and feel myself get up to hug them both. I watch as Julien does the same. But all I can think about is how unfair this is. It's immature, I know, but I feel like I've been slapped in the face.
