Chapter 10

I drove down the highway. I was unable to get any sleep last night. After I got past my self doubt, I thought of what I could do to save her. I fought my eyes. Trying desperately to keep them open. I blinked the drowiness from them.

I saw the trees past by in a blur. The other cars. I saw the hospital within sight. I pinched myself to open my eyes. My eyes shot open, right as I pulled into the parking lot. It took me 3 attempts to park my car. Still fighting to keep my eyes open, I stumbled through the parking lot, into the hospital.

As usual, Georgia was seated at the front desk. Completely engaged in her computer. without greeting her I walked straight up to Alana's room.

As I reached the door, I felt like I was about to faint from tiredness. I pawed at the handle, before grasping it and twisting. When I walked through the door I placed my bag on the desk in the corner and sat in the chair. Alana was still asleep. That of course was to be expected.

I decided to close my eyes for a minute, since Alana was still out. I was slowly pulled into darkness as my lack of rest caught up to me.

I was awoken by the sound of frantic breathing. My eyes dragged open. I twisted my head to look for the source of the beeping. As my eyes lay on Alana I noticed that the beeping was coming from Alana's monitor. I saw the indication of her heartbeat. It was quickly slowing, then fastening. Then it completely stopped.

My eyes grew wide. When she wasn't breathing I rushed to her to take her pulse. Nothing. I threw open the door and yelled down the corridor.

"Help!!! Someone HELP!!!" I scurried back into the room and pressed the emergency button above Alana's head. I ran back out into the hall and looked for Dr Mills. I found his office door and barged in without knocking. He looked up at me in shock, "Dr Blemmings. What are you thinking? Barging in without knocking…" Before he continue about how rude it was I  cut him off, "Alna's not breathing." He must've seen my panic stricken face, or heard thr urgency in my voice. Regardless he swiftly followed me back to Alana's room where a nurse was already there performing CPR trying to get a pulse back into her.

Immediately he checked her pulse and turned to the nurse. "Get me an oxygen machine and a difibulator." She rushed out of thre room and within a minute she was back. By then, a team of doctors were already ready, crowded around her bed, ready to go into emergency surgery if its needed.

I stepped just outside the door and leaned my back against the wall. I looked up and down the hall. I needed a breather. This morning was not turning out very well. Just when I thought she was going to be let out. Uggh, I hope she was ok, but I couldn't go inside with all those people. I would be more touble than help.

I heard the beeping of Alana's heart monitor start again. I breathed a huge sigh of relief and I watched as one by one the doctors filed out. I re-entered the room and noticed only Dr Mills was left. He had contacted Alana's mother and was speaking to her on the phone right now

"Yes Mrs Wells. Alana's heart stopped. We are not sure yet why, but will be runnning tests laster today," a slight pause, "Yess ok Mrs Wells…I understand…Yes Ma'am. We'll hold the tests tomorrow then…Ok…Thank you…Bye." As he clicked off the phone he turned to look to me. I glanced at Alana. She was lying down on her bed. Eyes closed, but not asleep.

I motioned for Dr Mills to step outide so we could speak, privately.

As soon as we were outside of Alana's earshot, he spoke in a hushed tone. "We have no idea why this happned to Alana. She has no history of heart failure. We need you to speak to her. Find out if , it may be unintentionally self imposed." I nodded and asked, "Will Mrs and Mr Wells be making an appearance?"
